LIVE BLOG: Game 2 of JPS Senior Bowl Classic

By Billy Hull on December 7, 2019

Team Freedom 12, Team Liberty 6, final Kickoff is a pooch, no real kickers in this exhibition. Liberty tries its darnedest to emulate the old Stanford miracle kick return. Eventually, Rashod Tanner (Moanalua) tackles Natividad near midfield to end this sneakily fun battle. Game over. No major injuries, hallelujah. RJ Javar scrambles for 13 yards to the Liberty 45, then finds Jayzon Ramos for a 24-yard gain to the 21. Time out, :14 left. Last TO for Freedom. Javar eludes […]

Clutch Gene: Makoa Nakamura’s buzzer-beater lifts Leilehua over ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2019

Chad Townsend doesn’t want to hear about status or perceptions. For the Leilehua boys basketball coach, all that matters is the next game on Saturday. “We got Saint Louis,” Townsend said on Friday afternoon after the Mules edged ‘Iolani 47-46. Landyn Jumawan led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points. Nick Cheung splashed six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points to lead ‘Iolani, which has lost three close nonconference games in the past week. True, there’s a lot to digest […]

Moanalua hangs on for OT win over ‘Iolani with ‘Colonel’ in charge

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2019

He’s not just an interim coach. Col. Michael Wingfield is the JROTC instructor at Moanalua. The players simply call him “Colonel”. In other matchups on day one of the OIA-ILH Challenge, Leilehua outlasted Mid-Pacific 62-54, Maryknoll defeated Kalaheo 45-37 and Kahuku hit three key free throws in […]

Saint Louis hoops coach Dan Hale says it’s fun to be back in Hawaii

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2019

The sight of Dan Hale in a red Saint Louis coach’s polo shirt is a bit shocking. Hale, the former Punahou standout player and state championship coach, is in his element as an adopted Crusader. With the new facility up and nearing completion sometime in mid-2020, the physical education teacher will also be involved in running the new gym. Saint Louis, awaiting the return of as many as eight players once the football season is officially over, got a glimpse […]
