7:16: Freedom recovers onside kick. If Freedom can hold the ball, it’s over.

7:15: Whistle blows on what looked to be a really good onside kick. Liberty is offside. 5-yard penalty. Replay the kick.

7:13: Canyon throws to Machado in the front right corner of the end zone and Machado catches and goes down for a TD. Replay looks no good. Refs call it good. Souza kicks the extra point. FREEDOM 23, LIBERTY 21, 0:55 left in fourth quarter.

7:11: Canyon hits Machado with a 16-yard pass to the Freedom 6.

7:09: Canyon’s long pass to the end zone down the left sideline is just out of the hands of Machadeo

7:08: A pass interference penalty on Freedom brings the ball to the Freedom 34.

7:07: Liberty is at the Freedom 49. 1:44 left in game.

6:59: Freedom marching again. Quilinderino catches a 14-yard pass from Crawford. Then, Kamai runs for 12 yards. Ball is at the Liberty 18. 4:27 left in fourth quarter.

6:55: A Canyon pass is intercepted by Christian Sison (Moanalua) of Freedom. 7:00 left.

6:54: Liberty takes over at its 34.

6:50: Freedom gets across midfield on Quilinderino’s 19-yard run, but the drive stalls and the team eventually gives up the ball on downs.

6:47: Third quarter ends.

6:45: Liberty goes three and out and will be punting.

6:41: Crawford airs it out down the left sideline for Setu, and the latter makes the catch for a 31-yard touchdown. Bright kicks the extra point. FREEDOM 23, LIBERTY 14, 1:29 left in third quarter.

6:40: Quilinderino catches a 16-yard pass from Crawford, and then Raynen Ho-Mook makes a 10-yard drab. Freedom Ball is at the Liberty 31.

6:36: Storm Quilinderino (Waialua) runs for 13 yards and then Crawford hits Paz with a 20-yard pass. Freedom is on the move.

6:31: After a 15-yard Freedom penalty, Machado catches a 20-yard TD pass from Canyon in the deep left corner of the end zone. Souza kicks the extra point. FREEDOM 16, LIBERTY 14, 6:25 left in third quarter.

6:29: Juan Vargas (Pearl City) catches a 21-yard pass and Liberty is driving on its first possession of the second half.

6:25: Third quarter underway.

6:08: First half ends.

6:02: Three plays later, Crawford takes a wildcat snap and scores on a 1-yard TD run, thanks to a second effort push after he appeared to be stopped. Crawford then passes to Myka Kukahiwa for the 2-point conversion. FREEDOM 16, LIBERTY 7, 0:30 left in second quarter.


5:59: Crawford continues his hot streak, escaping a sack and getting 3 yards. Then, he runs for 18 and hits Nainoa Paz (Nanakuli) for 27 yards to the Liberty 10.

5:56: Freedom is on the march. Crawford throws to Solofa Setu (Waipahu), who makes an over-the-shoulder catch, for a gain of 29. Then Crawford runs 18 yards to the Liberty 40.

5:49: Komiti (Kaimuki) blasts in from the left side and gets a solid hand on the punt by Hedani (‘Iolani) to block it. The ball goes out the back of the end zone for a safety. FREEDOM 8, LIBERTY 7, 2:39 left in second quarter.

5:47: After two more plays, Liberty will be punting from inside its own end zone.

5:45: Freedom’s Kekai Kaimikaua (Roosevelt) drops Liberty running back Nathaniel Balangitao (Kalani) for a 3-yard loss to the 1.

5:44: Freedom punts and pins Liberty at its 4.

5:41: Jaku Hanohano-Baptista (Leilehua) drops Crawford for a 1-yard loss to bring up fourth down for Freedom. Hanohano-Baptista is down and getting medical attention for an apparent knee injury.

5:40: Nainoa Irish (Lahainaluna) causes a Freedom fumble, but Freedom recovers.

5:36: Liberty gives up the ball on downs.

5:34: Brock Hedani (‘Iolani), who got a few carries at running back, comes in at QB to replace Canyon.

5:32: Joseph Chin (Kaiser) sacks Canyon for an 8-yard loss. Another player falls on Canyon and Canyon stays down holding his head without his helmet on for a while.

5:30: Tasi Komiti (Kaimuki) comes up with a tackle for loss for Freedom.

5:18: Three plays later, Crawford’s screen pass to Tahj Hauhio (Nanakuli), who eludes tacklers and somehow stays in bounds on the right side for a 10-yard TD. An extra-point try by Keola Bright (Nanakuli) goes wide left. LIBERTY 7, FREEDOM 6, 0:49 left in first quarter.

5:15: On Freedom’s next possession, Crawford lofts a pass to Kapena Kamai (Baldwin), who makes an over-the-shoulder, diving catch on the sideline for a 28-yard gain to the Liberty 14.

5:08: On the next play, Canyon fires a bullet to Noah Machado (Waianae) on a slant route for a 9-yard touchdown. Christian Souza (Damien) kicks the extra point. LIBERTY 7, FREEDOM 0, 5:32 left in first quarter.

5:07: Canyon’s screen pass to Brian-Allen Kamanu (Kailua) goes for 20 yards to help bring the ball to the Freedom 9.

5:05: Makana Canyon (Pearl City) is in at quarterback for Liberty.

5:04: A 19-yard punt gives Liberty the ball at the Freedom 47.

5:03: Freedom goes three and out and punts.

5:02: Due to a high snap, Liberty’s Lopaka Fe’esagu (Pearl City) sacks Crawford for 8 yards.

5:01: Sedric Crawford (Nanakuli) is in at quarterback for Freedom.

5:00: Freedom starts at its 34.

4:59: The game is underway.

Pregame notes

4:58: Liberty wins the toss and defers. Freedom elects to receive. Liberty will defend the North end zone.

4:56: Ten-minute quarters will be played instead of the regular 12.

4:55: All players on the two teams walk to midfield from their benches to shake hands.

4:54: There is a moment of silence for the victims of this week’s shooting at Pearl Harbor.

4:53: National anthems and Hawaii pono’i have been sung.

4:45: Liberty wearing light, sand-colored with green camouflage jerseys. Freedom wearing two-tone green wtih black camouflage jerseys.

4:42: Each player is being introduced running out of the locker room.

4:23: There is 12:50 left on the pregame clock.

4:21: Final score of the eighth-grade game, Team Independence 14, Team Allegiance 8.


4:17: There is an eighth-grade game going on right now. With 1:01 to go, Team Independence is ahead of Team Allegiance 14-8.
