Cry of the Wolf: Aerial circus enters playoffs

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2014

By halftime, it seemed to be Pac-Five’s kind of game. Sophomore Kainoa Ferreira had already thrown 38 passes, and though just 17 were completed, he hadn’t thrown an interception. At some point in the second half, Damien’s secondary would probably wear out. Nobody has to cover a receiver downfield 38 times in a half, unless they’re playing the Wolfpack. Double that and it would’ve been 76 pass attempts for the game. Instead, Damien ran the ball with enough success in […]

Monarch Airlines: Damien still balanced

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2014

To air, for the Damien Monarchs, is to be human. The program that not so long ago generated speedboy running backs like Kama Bailey and Kealoha Pilares didn’t take long to recognize the potential growth of its passing game. The Monarchs aired the ball out 30 times in a 26-21 win over Pac-Five on Friday, a far cry from the days when Pilares and Bailey were churning out 200-yard games on the ground. It’s not like coach Eddie Klaneski eschewed […]

LIVE BLOG: Damien 26, Pac-Five 21, final

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2014

First quarter Labanon scored on a rollout from 5 yards out to give Damien a 7-0 lead with 4:02 left in the first quarter. That capped a nine-play, 52-yard drive. Second quarter The Wolfpack racked up good yardage, but it was mostly between the 20s against a resilient Damien pass rush that clamped down until midway through the second quarter. Ferreira guided the ‘Pack on a seven-play, 60-yard hurry-up drive. His fourth-down lob to Tsubasa Brennan for a 6-yard TD […]

Damien in rare shootout with Saint Louis

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 4, 2014

Damien had scored a total of 14 points against Saint Louis in a four-year span leading up to the latest meeting. The Monarchs matched that figure in their first two possessions on Friday, relying largely on the height and hands of wideout Kapiinaokala King. But Damien couldn’t keep pace with Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for five touchdowns in an efficient performance and the Crusaders pulled away to a 54-34 win at Aloha Stadium. Tagovailoa completed 10 of […]

King is a dangerous Monarch

By Nick Abramo on September 6, 2014

When Damien prepares to play Punahou in football, the Monarchs know they will be facing an uphill climb in nearly every facet of the game. And there was nothing different on Friday at Aloha Stadium, when Damien fell 52-6 to the defending Division I state champion Buffanblu. Nothing different at all. The Monarchs’ last win against Punahou came in 1992 by a 28-26 count. Interestingly, a player named Punahou Aina was one of the Monarchs’ top players that season. And […]

Video: ‘Iolani vs. Damien

By Paul Honda on October 31, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 ‘Iolani captured its 10th consecutive ILH Division II title with this 28-7 win. It is telling how dynastic the Raiders are in D-II. They came through in the ILH season despite injuries to some key players, mobilizing a number of first-year starters. Damien was senior-heavy this year, but ‘Iolani remains the champ. The return of defensive backs J.T. Los Banos and Max Look were key, as was the return of wide receiver Austin Ohira. Running back […]

Trench Warfare 4: Marc Ma vs. Daniel Eli

By Jerry Campany on October 29, 2013

The ‘Iolani defensive tackle and the Damien guard won’t bang heads on every play, as Marc Ma flip-flops the side he is playing on, but they will certainly bang heads enough. Daniel Eli, a senior, enjoys a weight advantage at 5-foot-7, 270 pounds but Ma (6-2, 214) holds a decided reach advantage. All scoring is 10-point must, and completely subjective. Round 1 The first time the two engage, Eli gets help from Paul Galang. It doesn’t become a theme, though, […]
