Damien has a chance to make a stand

By Jerry Campany on September 20, 2013

Damien has been here too many times before. The Monarchs go into Saturday night’s main event at Aloha Stadium leading Division II rival ‘Iolani by a game in the standings and can take a big step toward earning a bye for the playoffs with a win. But if history is any judge, don’t count on it. Damien has lost to ‘Iolani 12 times in a row and has not finished a game within three touchdowns of the Raiders since 2008, […]

Video: Damien vs. St. Francis

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 Part 1 has game highlights of what started out as a Saints upset in the making. But eventually, Damien’s depth and physical play took a toll. D.J. Aumua was a dual threat as a running back — three touchdowns on the day — and offensive lineman. I don’t recall seeing a player change jerseys halfway through a high school game before. See the post-game interview with the Damien senior in Part 1. Part 2 is a […]

ILH keeping close eye on hits

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2013

Officially, it wasn’t a meeting. Still, Punahou coach Kale Ane was willing to discuss the issue with the Interscholastic League of Honolulu before and after his team’s game with Kamehameha over the weekend. “It was a very informal phone conversation with the football coordinator (Georges Gilbert),” Ane said on Tuesday. “It was more talking about the game so we’re aware of things.” Clearly, in a new world of rule changes to protect players, the word is safety, and that word […]

Update: Damien 34, St. Francis 14, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

1:59 p.m. Just a minute away from kickoff between Damien and St. Francis. This is a competitive Monarchs team despite players who have transferred out, plus some early-season academic casualties. Syles Choy is a seasoned, solid quarterback. St. Francis has been hit by injuries. I count 25 suited up in uniform. This is a life lesson for them, this inaugural season in varsity football. If they can make it through this schedule — D-I giants Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis […]
