Chan hired to coach volleyball at Saint Louis

Dion Chan is Saint Louis’ new varsity boys volleyball head coach and program coordinator, Crusaders athletic director Wade Okamura announced Tuesday. Chan has 18 years of experience as an assistant coach at various levels of volleyball in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, most recently at Maryknoll. Southside earns USAV silver volleyball title

Hawaii’s Southside Volleyball Club won the championship in the Silver Bracket in the USAV Boys Junior National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday. The hitting of Addie Enriques and Avery Enriques led Southside to a a 25-16, 22-25, 15-12 win over Gigantes of Puerto Rico in the title match. The blocking of Nalu Kahapea and Kamahao Kawelu was instrumental in a 25-15, 26-24 semifinal victory over Ocean Bay of California. ‘Iolani adds Carney to lead volleyball program

Iolani chose one of its own to lead its boys volleyball program. The Raiders announced on Friday that former player Sean Carney has been named their new boys volleyball coach. Carney takes over for Carl Rallita, who stepped down after three seasons. Carney was the head coach at Maryknoll for the past two seasons, capped with a third-place finish in the ILH last year. Carney’s Spartans went 2-1 against the Raiders last year and Iolani finished fourth in the league. […]


Kamehameha VB coach Downing steps down

Kamehameha boys volleyball coach Kainoa Downing has resigned from the position after five years in charge of the successful program, according to a school news release. Downing’s Warriors went to the Division I state tournament in all five of his seasons and won a state championship in 2011, with a runner-up finish in 2013. With Hall of Honor recepient Larry Tuileta gone, the Buffanblu boys volleyball team was supposed to come back to the pack a little bit. Circumstances won’t allow ‘Iolani athletic director Carl Schroers to mosey into retirement. Schroers, who announced his intention to retire after the school year, is busy looking for new coaches. Boys volleyball coach Carl Rallita resigned from his position on Friday, citing time constraints. Last month, baseball coach Brent Shimokawa and softball coach Corey Okamura also departed. BJ Hosaka has outgrown his fish bowl. Hosaka was the big fish at tiny Hawaii Baptist as a four year starter in both basketball and volleyball and will be rewarded for it on June 7 at the Dole Cannery Square’s Pomaikai Ballroom when he is inducted into the Enterprise / HHSAA Hall of Honor. Punahou’s Micah Ma‘a was the biggest offensive threat for the Buffanblu on their run to the Division I state title, and now, Ma‘a is the ILH boys volleyball player of the year.
