By Nick Abramo on May 17, 2015

Based on history and math, when Punahou enters a boys volleyball season, it has a seven in 10 chance to win a state championship by season’s end. Since its inception in 1969, there have been 47 boys volleyball state tournaments and Punahou has won 33 of them. Coach Rick Tune and his boys captured their latest title on Saturday night with a 25-23, 25-18, 25-27, 25-13 victory over Kamehameha-Hawaii at Blaisdell Arena. And while Tune and the Buffanblu have a […]

HBA, of course, is a perennial power regardless of classification. The Eagles are No. 5 in the Star-Advertiser Boys Volleyball Top 10. This is for the HHSAA Division II state crown. Hana has not won a state title in boys volleyball. Hawaii Baptist has won the last four and six of the past seven. That’s […]

Kills from Karson Cruz and Skyler Engleman extended Moanalua’s lead to 11-7 in Set 5. Engleman’s kill and a Kamehameha hitting error made it 13-9, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout. David Kaaa’s kill cut the deficit to 13-10. Cruz responded with a kill to put Na Menehune at match point […]

All of the top teams are staying home for the first two rounds of the New City Nissan Boys Volleyball State Championship. ILH king Punahou drew the top seed and will play either Waianae or Mililani at Moanalua on May 9. Na Menehune, the OIA champ, got some good news and bad news. The good news is they get to host all the way through the finals. The bad news is that they get either Kamehameha or Waipahu in their […]

Solomon feels the pain of Pearl City’s loss

By Nick Abramo on May 1, 2015

Two Pearl City players dove desperately for a dig. They didn’t get the ball and they collided hard into each other on the way to the floor. The Chargers’ P-Jay Solomon stayed down longer and appeared to be more hurt than teammate Jordan Florita. At first, it looked as though Solomon would shake it off and return to action in the OIA Division II boys volleyball championship game against Castle. But he kept looking at his arm while being attended […]
