OIA boys volleyball brackets

By Jerry Campany on April 17, 2015

Moanalua will be going for its fourth-straight OIA championship as the top seed in next week’s league tournament. Na Menehune went through the regular season undefeated and can make coach Alan Cabanting the first coach since Roosevelt’s Robin Goo from 1977-1980 to win four straight OIA titles. Doug Hee won the title for Moanalua in 2011 before Cabanting took over. Goo is the only coach to win four in a row. No team has ever won five OIA titles in […]

By Paul Honda on April 16, 2015

The top two teams in the ILH boys volleyball chase meet tonight at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. Game 1 The Warriors finished strong and took the opening set 25-20. Just one hitting error by KS and five service errors by the visiting Buffanblu. Micah Ma‘a is blasting lasers from everywhere, as usual, and had eight kills. Game 2 Another close set, and Punahou’s making just enough of those slight miscues to give Kamehameha an edge. Warriors lead 21-18 as PUN calls a […]

Moanalua junior Matautia commits to UH

By Nick Abramo on April 11, 2015

It was quite a week for Moanalua’s Austin Matautia. On Thursday, Charlie Wade — the Hawaii volleyball coach — came by to watch 6-foot-4 outside hitter Matautia and others play in a tournament at Kamehameha. On Friday, Matautia went to the Stan Sheriff Center, thanks to Wade’s invitation, and watched the Rainbow Warriors defeat Stanford in three sets. After the match, Matautia’s dream pretty much came true when he orally accepted a scholarship to play for Wade. There is a […]

King Kekaulike’s Cowell is a hidden gem

By Nick Abramo on April 11, 2015

If you want to be seen as a national volleyball prospect, Upcountry Maui is not the ideal place to be. But it might not matter for outside hitter Colton Cowell of King Kekaulike. Prior to the Cowell and his Na Alii teammates’ tournament match against Kamehameha on Thursday night, Warriors coach Kainoa Downing made sure reporters covering the event knew what kind of talent was in the gym. Downing immediately pointed to Cowell warming up, and Cowell — despite two sprained […]

Beach having a blast in Hawaii

By Stan Lee on April 10, 2015

Punahou might have been too nice of a host on the first night of the Clash of the Titans. The Buffanblu were swept by Huntington Beach, the Nation’s No. 1 team, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21 on Friday. “To play in this environment is unbelievable,” said Huntington Beach coach Craig Pazanti. “The student section, the gym, the atmosphere was amazing. We’ve played in some hostile crowds but this is something we definitely want to do to get us ready for the end […]

Enriques: Team concept is indispensable

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2015

The team concept is simple, on paper. Putting it into practice is much tougher, and Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Guy Enriques is one coach who is well aware of how much of an uphill climb it is to get everyone to put team first and individualism second. “Everyone talks about team, but can you walk the talk?” said Enriques, the Warriors boys volleyball coach who is on Oahu with his team for the ‘Iolani Invitational. “I like to relate team to family. How […]
