GAME NIGHT 8/5: Roosevelt/Kaiser

It’s opening night in the 808 with seven high school football games scheduled for Oahu.

A new era of football for the Kaiser Cougars gets underway tonight as ex-Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez makes his coaching debut for the Couagrs, who host the Roosevelt Rough Riders, who also have a new coach in Kui Kahooilihala. Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. and live updates will follow below.

10:07 p.m.: Arnold Martinez turns Kaiser into a winner in his first game, beating Roosevelt 28-21. Roosevelt’s new coach has to be pleased with his bunch of scrappers, though, they hung tough.


9:39: Missed a couple of scores, but Kaiser scores with 1:34 left to take a 28-21 lead. What a game.

9:13 p.m.: And Kaiser responds! Andrew Kaafusi with an 88-yard kick return to make it 21-14 with 10:47 left.

9:09 p.m.: Isaiah Rosa scores from two yards out, Roosevelt ties Kaiser at 14 with 11:08 left in the game. Kekahuna with the extra points.

9:04: Halftime.

8:17 p.m.: Sashton Kekahuna strikes for Roosevelt, 8-yard run with five seconds before halftime. Kick was blocked, 14-6 Kaiser.

8:01 p.m.: Pangan strikes again, this time hauling in a 78-yard pass from Kainoa Torres, Kaiser up 14-0 with 4:41 left in the first half.

7:47 p.m.: First quarter ends with Kaiser up 7-0.

7:28 p.m.: Keone Pangan returns a fumble 20 yards for Kaiser’s first score of the season. Cougars lead 7-0 with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

7:05 p.m.: Roosevelt shuts out Kaiser 12-0 in the JV game.

Last meeting: The Cougars set a school record for points in a game with a 71-0 blowout of the Rough Riders on the way to a Division II state title in 2013.

>> Roosevelt leads the all-time series 17-13

>> The Cougars are on their fifth head coach in the last eight seasons.

>> Arnold Martinez is the 11th head coach in school history. Coaches before him went 2-8 in their debuts but 2-3 against OIA teams (0-5 vs. ILH).

>> Kui Kahooilihala is the 10th Roosevelt head coach in the Prep Bowl and state championship eras (since 1973). During that time a Roosevelt coach has never beaten an Oahu team in his coaching debut.

>> Fifteen years ago, Roosevelt receiver Joey Perreira set a school record that still stands with 211 receiving yards in a win over Kaiser. No other Roosevelt player has ever had a 200-yard receiving game.

>> Isaac Saffery holds Kaiser’s single-game rushing record with 264 yards in a win over Roosevelt in 2006.
