GAME NIGHT 8/25: Waipahu/Roosevelt

Thanks to a bye and a forfeit, OIA Division II contender Waipahu plays just its second game of the season when it heads East to face Roosevelt at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

10:14: Waipahu runs the clock out and will improve to 3-0. This game is over.

10:09: Waipahu is now on the Roosevelt 37 after a couple of first downs with 3:13 to play. A Roosevelt defender is down, so there is currently an injury timeout.

10:06: Kekahuna is picked off Kamakana Kahalewai on a ricochet off his receiver’s foot.

10:00: Amorozo continues to throw and is picked off by Jared Elwin. Rough Riders to start from their own 38.

9:55: For some reason, the Marauders have thrown exclusively this drive, picking up a first down along the way. They face third-and-15 with 7:56 to go.

9:51: Waipahu will start its next drive from its own 25 with 9:27 to go.

9:48: Tamaki Iijima pounds it in for the two point conversion. It’s now 35-8 with 9:27 to go.

9:46: TOUCHDOWN ROOSEVELT. Kekahuna rushes 23 yards to the end zone and the Rough Riders are on the board. Timeout Roosevelt.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:37: TOUCHDOWN WAIPAHU. Cody Mercado-Aiona takes a handoff four yards into the end zone, and then punches in the two point conversion, enabling the running clock to start.

9:30: Roosevelt quarterback Shastyn Kekehuna is picked off by Fiva Tulafale, who read that like a book. Waipahu takes over on its own 48.

9:26: Three-and-out for Waiaphu. Stagnant half for both teams. Roosevelt will take over from its own 40.

9:21: Rough Riders punt after another three-and-out. Marauders take over from their own 39.

9:19: Waipahu goes for it on fourth down and turns it over on the Roosevelt 32.

9:17: Roosevelt punts after a three-and-out, Waipahu takes over at the Rough Riders’ 44.

9:12: Waipahu gets a first down but not much after. Roosevelt takes over from its own 14 with 9:22 to go in the third.

9:09: Waipahu will start the second half from its own 33.


THIRD QUARTER

8:50: We’ve hit the half with Waipahu up 27-0 and the ball to receive the second half.

8:48: TOUCHDOWN WAIPAHU. Amorozo and Ezekial-Kai Kapanui-Reyes connect for an 11-yard score with 11 seconds left in the half. Amorozo then runs in a 2-point conversion.

8:42: Another three-and-out for Roosevelt. Waipahu will take over from its own 47 with 1:03 to go in the half.

8:38: Three-and-out for Waipahu’s offense, their first of the game. Roosevelt will take over from its own 10 with 3:14 left in the half.

8:35: Three-and-out for Roosevelt. Waipahu will take over with 4:57 left in the half from their own 25.

8:29: WOW. JUST WOW. Amorozo unleashes a 42-yard bomb to Matthew Fiesta , who makes a spectacular catch while falling down. What a play. Two-point conversion is no good. 19-0 with 7:18 left in the half.

8:22: Three-and-out for Roosevelt. Waipahu to take over from their own 45 with 9:26 to go in the half.

SECOND QUARTER

8:15: TOUCHDOWN MARAUDERS. Amorozo and Alika Ahsing connect for a 1-yard touchdown as time expires in the first quarter. Amorozo’s PAT is no good. 13-0 at the end of the first.

8:13: ROOSEVELT FUMBLES, WAIPAHU RECOVERS. Marauders take over on the Rough Riders’ 13.

8:10: TOUCHDOWN WAIPAHU. Impressive drive there for the Marauders. They take it right up the field with a balanced attack. Quarterback Braden Amorozo completely fools the defense with a 23-yard read option keeper on fourth-and-inches. He then kicks the extra point. Waipahu 7, Roosevelt 0, 2:59 to go in the first.

8:02: Rough Riders go for it on fourth down at the Waipahu 34. They’ve been moving the ball in chunks and really eating up some clock. They don’t get it after a drive that lasted six and a half minutes. Waipahu takes over with 5:26 to go in the first.

7:55: Rough Riders fail to get a first down in their first three plays and go for it on fourth-and-2 from their own 37. They barely get it. Bold move there.

7:54: Rough Riders will start from their own 28.

7:53: Roosevelt will receive to begin the game.

FIRST QUARTER

7:25 p.m.: We’re around 20 minutes away from kickoff. Waipahu won the JV game 62-24.

NOTES: Waipahu is 15-1 in the Prep Bowl/State championship era against Roosevelt with the only loss coming at 2007 at Waipahu. The Marauders last lost at Roosevelt in 2013, when they fell to McKinley. Waipahu can start successive seasons 3-0 for the first time since 1977-78. Roosevelt can start a season 2-1 for the first time since 2007.
