Moanalua sweeps OIA East wrestling

The Moanalua boys and girls wrestling teams swept the OIA East Division championships on Saturday, combining to crown seven champions. Elijah Asuncion (115 pounds), Logan Garcia (122), Noah Wusstig (140), Chase Wusstig (147) and Damien Agao Casabar (197) won for the Moanalua boys and Patricia Ching (157) and Richann Benito (186) won for the girls. The Pearl City girls wrestling team added another accomplishment to their long list last week, going 3-0 and beating Kapolei in the final to win the OIA Dual Meet Tournament on Friday at Farrington. The final was in doubt right up until the final two matches, with the Chargers holding a slim 32-31 lead after forfeiting the 112 and 117 weight classes. OIA varsity dual wrestling championships a go

The OIA varsity Dual Meet Championship is still a go for this weekend at Farrington despite a dearth of teams. There are only three boys teams committed, partly to allow athletes to rest of for the stretch run and partly because coaches are committed to the JV championships running at the same time at Radford. Kahuku’s Teniya Alo wrestled at 132 last week and was as dominant as ever with no obvious effects from the physical match she encountered with Radford’s Angela Peralta the week before. She never intended on staying at 145 and sources say she will wrestle at either 127 or 132, whichever provides the most competitive bracket.
