Campbell’s Tynanes overcomes knee injury

By Christian Shimabuku on January 10, 2017

Campbell senior Micah Tynanes, who was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, is hoping for his second straight sweep of the OIA and state wrestling titles next month. He won both in the 195-pound weight class last year and will most likely compete at 220 this year in order for Campbell to have a complete lineup. However, a 25-pound jump in weight class won’t be his toughest obstacle on the road to a repeat. As a defensive lineman on […]

Kamehameha boys show depth at Round Robin

By Jerry Campany on January 9, 2017

There weren’t many matches at Kamehameha on Saturday, but Warriors’ 170-pounder Chasyn Aipoalani made the most of the three opportunities he did get. Aipoalani pinned all three of his opponents at the OIA/ILH Round Robin at Kamehameha on Saturday, taking out Mark Guillot of Radford, Spike Kahalewai of Nanakuli and Castle’s Gabriel Kaneakalau before packing things up. Aipoalani lost the only match he wrestled in at Officials, falling to Waianae’s Felix Dellatan and forfeiting his next match in the consolation […]

Gooman beats Ikei in another tight match

By Jerry Campany on January 8, 2017

It seems anyone can win at 112 pounds on any given day. Kamehameha state champion Ashley Gooman was the latest to show off her skills, going 3-0 at the OIA/ILH Round Robin at Mililani on Saturday. Gooman opened her day by pinning Pearl City’s Makana Cooper and closed it with a stoppage of Aiea’s Kristen Bareng. Her middle match of the day was the crowd-pleaser, though. With Teniya Alo of Kahuku commanding all of the attention for her 5-4 win […]

Alo beats Peralta at 145 pounds

By Jerry Campany on January 7, 2017

Kahuku’s Teniya Alo beat Angela Peralta of Radford 5-4 in a battle of state champions and former training partners on Saturday at Mililani. Alo, who won a state title as a freshman for Iolani before falling in the semifinals last year, beat Peralta 5-4 in the mini tournament. Peralta had the edge in the early going despite two stalling calls but lost it on a late takedown. The match took place at Peralta’s 145-pound class. Alo wrestled at 127 at […]

Aiea, McKinley show off contenders

By Jerry Campany on January 7, 2017

Of the few wrestlers who were granted three matches at the OIA/ILH Round Robin at Moanalua on Saturday, three OIA boys came through with big performances. Waianae’s Ke’ale Keliinoi shook off a loss to Pac-Five’s Joseph Fong at Officials to register three pins in three matches in the latest tournament, sticking Micah Desmot of Damien, Trysten Williams of Kapolei and Punahou’s Noa Takeyama in succession at 138 pounds. The only other boy to earn three pins was McKinley’s Daniel Ochoa, […]

Kamehameha boys, Moanalua girls take duals

By Jerry Campany on December 29, 2016

If there was any doubt after Officials, the Kamehameha boys wrestling team erased it with the title at the Moanalua Duals on Friday. The Warriors, who won the team title at Officials, beat Campbell 61-19 in the duals final after taking out ILH rival Saint Louis 56-13 in the semifinals. It’s early, but that sets up the Warriors to be state contenders. Kamehameha hasn’t won states since 2013. Moanalua won the girls title after finishing fourth at Officials behind Roosevelt, […]
