The Pearl City girls wrestling team added another accomplishment to their long list last week, going 3-0 and beating Kapolei in the final to win the OIA Dual Meet Tournament on Friday at Farrington.
The final was in doubt right up until the final two matches, with the Chargers holding a slim 32-31 lead after forfeiting the 112 and 117 weight classes. The next two were contested, though, with Mikayla Abe beating her opponent 8-1 at 122 pounds and Chanel Hunter closing it out with an 8-0 win to give her team the 39-31 victory.
Girls:
Pearl City 45 – Leilehua 32
Kapolei 42 – Waianae 33
Pearl City 54 – Roosevelt 19
Pearl City 39 – Kapolei 31
Girls Dual Meet Champion: Pearl City
Kapolei took the boys title by winning their only dual, beating Leilehua 44-26. Andre and Jayson Pagurayan got the Hurricanes out to a 12-0 start with successive pins and the closest the Mules came to taking the lead was 28-20 behind a pin by Anthony Brett.
Boys:
Leilehua 50 – Waianae 29
Kapolei 44 – Leilehua 26
Boys Dual Meet Champion: Kapolei
I think it was Brett Barefoot not Anthony Brett. There were a lot of exciting matches and could have been even better had more schools attended. This weekend will be interesting on the west side with Campbell, Waianae, Mililani, Leilehua, and Kapolei all in the mix for the boys. The girls side boasts a close battle between Pearl City, Leilehua, Waianae, Campbell, and Kapolei. Should be fun!
