Matautia, Tihada jump into boys P4P

Punahou’s Legend Matautia shook off some back problems to win the ILH title, and jumped into Hawaii Prep World’s boys pound-for-pound rankings in the process. Matautia, who also won at Officials, debuted at No. 9 in time for the Texaco/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships that begins Wednesday. He is the top seed at 220 pounds. State wrestling brackets released

Here are the brackets for the 2018 Texaco/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships released today. The OIA has seven of the 14 No. 1 seeds on the boys side with the ILH receiving six and the MIL getting one. The OIA also has seven No. 1 seeds on the girls side with the ILH only getting one (Zoe Omura of ‘Iolani at 97 pounds). The MIL has four No. 1 seeds and the BIIF two. We will have more on them later. State girls wrestling qualifiers

Hawaii Prep World has not been invited to the seeding meeting for the Texaco state wrestling championships this year, but we will post the brackets as soon as they are released. Until then, here is the list of state qualifiers as we know them along with major accomplishments. Cabanban and Vierra are 4-time ILH champs

Corey Cabanban and Zion Grace Vierra are four-time ILH wrestling champions. They did it with finals victories at Kamehameha on Thursday. Cabanban of Saint Louis, Hawaii Prep World’s No. 1 pound-for-pound wrestler, defeated Punahou’s Casen Watanabe 9-3 and had a vicious takedown late in the match for the final two points. “It feels good. Damien’s Lloyd upsets No. 10 Kekahuna

Damien’s Harry Lloyd, a first-year wrestler, loves the upsets. For the second time this season, Lloyd came up with a rousing victory over a higher-seeded wrestler. On Thursday, Lloyd topped second-seeded Kayson Kekahuna of Saint Louis 3-2 in the 285-pound class semifinals at the ILH championships at Kamehameha. Kekahuna is No. 10 in Hawaii Prep World’s pound-for-pound rankings.
