By Jason Kaneshiro on April 22, 2017

Following an 0-12 regular season, MPI eliminated Punahou with a 4-2 win on Wednesday and rallied past No. 5 ‘Iolani 10-6 on Friday at Ala Wai Field to secure a spot in the tournament final. Their opponent is scheduled to be determined on […]

By Hawaii Prep World on April 17, 2017

With wins over Campbell and Mililani to end the regular season, Pearl City earned the top spot out of the brutally difficult OIA West heading into the OIA softball playoffs that begin Wednesday with four first-round games in Division I. Moanalua and Kailua are still waiting to determine who will get the first-round bye out of the East as the No. 2 seed. Na Menehune and the Surfriders finished 9-3 and split the head-to-head matchups. Roosevelt (10-2) is the top […]

Campbell slugger Alo: 8 walks in a row

By Paul Honda on April 14, 2017

For Campbell, now one game behind the OIA West’s frontrunners at 8-3, it has been a week of torment. Five days earlier, the Sabers lost at home to Pearl City, 1-0, on an infield error during a Chargers steal attempt. That put a slight damper on senior day. This time, it was a laser throw from right field that denied them their best chance to push the game into extra innings. Campbell coach Michael “Shag” Hermosura has been tinkering in […]

Mama climbs mountain: Mililani atop OIA West

By Paul Honda on April 14, 2017

The rock-solid mountain at third base is Merilis Rivera, and she has known her share of ups and downs. The nature of softball, both as a hitter and a third baseman, can be a loopy swing of highs and lows. Even for Rivera, aptly nicknamed “Mama” at an early age. She is, in many ways, a caretaker of the spirit for a Mililani team that is often conjoined at heart. In huge battles against Pearl City and Campbell within the […]

TOP 10: Campbell, Kamehameha a cut above

By Hawaii Prep World on April 10, 2017

Fourteen years ago, Kailua and Kamehameha pulled off the rare feat of playing in both the state softball and state baseball finals in the same season. Two years ago, Campbell became the first team since Kamehameha in 1987 to win both the state softball and state baseball championships in the same year. Voters seem to think either one, or both, of those things could happen again this year with the league playoffs beginning over the next two weeks. The Sabers […]

Mililani’s Pascua-Stanton clutch under duress

By Paul Honda on April 7, 2017

Pristine Mililani, with 56 towering pine trees in the sight line between the left-field and right-field foul lines, was an idyllic setting for a proper pitchers duel on Thursday. There was the resilient Kaena Nistal, appropriately named with her unique combination of historic and breathtaking skill and power. Leilehua’s elite-level potential has been driven in part by Nistal’s performance. There was the master of endurance, Misha Carreira, whose countenance rarely strays, always poised and arguably a marathon hurler with few […]
