Kaupe’s HR lifts Maui over Leilehua, 6-5

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2017

Nawai Kaupe socked a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning as Maui edged Leilehua 6-5 this afternoon in opening-round play at the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. “I feel awesome. I love the way we came back,” Maui coach Mark Lau Hee said. “Nawai has been clutch for us. Between the kids working hard and the staff working hard with them, we’re lucky. Our boys did well last week and gave the […]

Maryknoll softball breaks through

By Brian McInnis on April 29, 2017

Maryknoll softball had never won a state championship nor an Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. After a thrilling seven-inning slugfest on Kamehameha’s damp field on Friday, that resume needs updating. The Spartans claimed their first league crown with a 12-10 win over the Warriors, earning them the ILH’s seeded berth into states next week. Queen’s “We Are The Champions” blared from the visitors’ section on the Kapalama lower campus softball field. UPDATE: The HHSAA softball bracket was released. Maryknoll is […]

Mililani is No. 1 seed in state softball

By Hawaii Prep World on April 29, 2017

OIA champion Mililani and ILH champion Maryknoll are the top two seeds in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships that begin Wednesday. KS-Hawaii is the top seed in Division II. The Division I bracket should look familiar, as 10 of the 12 teams have been in the field for the past two years. Mililani leads the way with its 25th consecutive appearance, followed by two-time defending champion Campbell in the tournament for the 12th straight year and Kamehameha in for the […]

Mid-Pacific gave it all it had until the end

By Brian McInnis on April 26, 2017

It was a scary moment out at Sand Island. Mid-Pacific, the upstart team that went 0-12 in the ILH regular season and improbably advanced to the final of the ILH playoffs, had barely settled in against Maryknoll before things went awry in what would become a 10-2 loss. Owls sophomore pitcher Lea Hanawahine had allowed three runs in the first inning and the Spartans got their leadoff batter on base in the second. After Sydney Kamakaiwi struck out bunting foul, […]

Mililani back on top in OIA softball

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 26, 2017

Misha Carreira made the most of her first and last opportunity to start an OIA championship game. The Mililani right-hander had backed up durable All-State pitcher Aubree Kim since her sophomore year, but stepped to the forefront with the Trojans pitching staff when Kim completed her high school career last spring. With Kim now pitching for Santa Clara, the Trojans finished second in the hyper-competitive OIA West at 9-3, a half game behind top-ranked Pearl City, after falling to the […]

Crusaders new No. 1; Chargers still at top

By Nick Abramo on April 25, 2017

Saint Louis captured the ILH baseball tournament title and then won the ILH overall championship with recent 8-5 and 5-1 wins over Kamehameha, and the Crusaders are the new No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll released Tuesday. The Crusaders also earned the top seed in this week’s Division I state tournament. The Warriors fell to No. 3, behind OIA champion Kailua, which stayed at No. 2 in the poll and also earned the state’s second seed. The softball […]

Dueling to Infinity: Peanut Butter and Cervantes

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

There will never be another Peanut Butter and there may never be another Pearl City softball team quite like this bunch. With a 1-0 victory over Campbell in the OIA semifinals on Monday at McKinley Softball Stadium, even Chargers coach Chad Obara admitted to a new experience of his own. “This is the first time I actually jumped up and celebrated,” he said. Obara and the team in classic white and purple certainly earned that right. The double no-hitter through […]

Movin’ on up: Mililani’s manic Monday

By Paul Honda on April 25, 2017

On the same day U.S. News and World Report rated Roosevelt above Mililani as the best public high school in the state, Mililani made a statement on the diamond with a 9-2 win over Roosevelt in the OIA softball semifinals at McKinley Softball Stadium. The Lady Trojans’ seven-run surge in the top of the seventh inning broke open what had been a sensible defensive battle between two solid pitchers: Mililani’s Misha Carreira and Roosevelt’s Jaeda Cabunoc. Through six innings, Cabunoc […]
