Na Alii work their way to a state title

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 6, 2017

For Aiea, practice did indeed make perfect. In building a state title contender, Na Alii’s workouts often exceeded coach Alan Higuchi’s practice plans. “This team, this year, they seemed to enjoy practices,” Higuchi said. “Usually my practices last 2, 2 1/2 hours. But the girls just enjoyed their time at the park. I’d look at my watch and go, ‘whoa, 3 1/2 hours went by.’ But they wanted to be there. … Credit goes to them that they wanted to put […]

Epic battles sharpened Sabers, Chargers

By Paul Honda on May 6, 2017

The instant classic had a classic finish for the two-time defending state champion Campbell Sabers. For Pearl City, a team that had already beaten Campbell in three dramatic one-run games during OIA play, there was nothing they could do as the Sabers chipped and chiseled for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past Pearl City 5-4. And just like that, the Chargers’ ultimate dream winning a state softball championship ended on the pristine grounds of […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 6, 2017

The West will rule again in the Division I  state softball tournament. Top-seeded Mililani ensured the state title will remain within the OIA West for the fourth straight year with a 14-4 rout of Kamehameha in the semifinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championship on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Mililani senior Shannon Pascua-Stanton went 3-for-3 with a home run and a double and drove in seven runs as the Trojans set up a fourth consecutive All-OIA West […]

Mililani survives Maui rally in 7th to move on

By Billy Hull on May 4, 2017

There aren’t a lot of routine wins at this point of the high school softball season. OIA champion and No. 1 seed Mililani survived some tense moments late to pull out a 7-6 victory over Maui to advance to the Division I semifinals of the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships tonight at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Merilis Rivera finished a triple shy of the cycle with three runs and two RBIs and Shannon Pascua-Stanton went 3-for-4 with a triple and two […]

Chargers stay focused to advance to semis

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2017

Chad Obara considers this year’s Pearl City softball team one of the most focused clubs he’s coached. So the Chargers weren’t fazed by a quick turnaround or an early deficit on Thursday. Nor were they distracted by the opportunities ahead after defeating third-seeded Lahainaluna 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the DataHouse/HHSAA Division I Softball Championships. “That’s how we’ve been taking the whole season,” Obara said. “Staying in the moment and concentrating on what’s at hand.” The Chargers arrived at Rainbow […]

Quick turnaround for Pearl City

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 4, 2017

When it comes to Pearl City’s state softball tournament schedule, the last shall indeed be first. The Chargers were the last team on the field on Wednesday night, closing out a 6-1 win over Kapolei just before 10 p.m. They’ll be back in Manoa Thursday morning in advance of a noon matchup with MIL champion and third-seeded Lahainaluna in the first of four DataHouse/HHSAA Division I State Softball Championship quarterfinal games at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The first-round schedule was […]

Jacobs-Kea feeds Kamehameha defense

By Jason Kaneshiro on May 3, 2017

Injuries limited Kamehameha senior Rayla Jacobs-Kea’s availability for much of the ILH season. The right-hander targeted the state tournament for a return and delivered for the Warriors in a 2-1 first round victory over Roosevelt on Wednesday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. “It was frustrating but I just had to trust in the process,” Jacobs-Kea said of enduring the setbacks during the regular season. Jacobs-Kea struck out two and walked none while feeding her infield throughout a complete-game victory that […]

By Hawaii Prep World on May 3, 2017

Campbell’s Jocelyn Alo and Chloe Domingo hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning of an 8-0 win over Kealakehe in the first round of the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Domingo scored twice and drove in three runs and Trinity Favela added a two-run double for the Sabers (13-4), who have made it to the state semifinals in seven consecutive seasons and advanced to the final five times during that run with three championships, […]
