OIA to start JV boys soccer for first time

When he was the head coach of the Mililani boys soccer team, Jeff Yamamoto made a difference in the lives of many Trojans athletes. Gatorade picks ‘Iolani’s Hori as player of year

‘Iolani’s Kristen Hori is the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Soccer Player of the year. The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and character, according to the Gatorade Company. Hori, a 5-foot3 senior striker, scord 14 goals and had 21 assists, leading the Raiders (12-1-3) to the Division I title game, where they lost to Mililani. Kailua’s Graham is Gatorade player of year

Kailua’s Nai‘a Graham is the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Soccer Player of the Year. The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character, according to the Gatorade Company. A 6-foot, 165-pound senior forward, Graham scored 28 goals and added 12 assists in the winter season, leading the Surfriders (9-6) to the Division II state quarterfinals. He’s been known to defer when it comes to media attention, but ‘Iolani junior Keoni-Kordell Makekau has emerged under the spotlight to become a true three-sport juggernaut. He chatted with Hawaii Prep World after another busy day on the track, winning the ILH championship in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.01 seconds. The 5-foot-11, 166-pound junior has football scholarship offers from Washington State and Hawaii. So far.

Hart departs as Kaumuki soccer coach

Kaimuki High School is looking for a new girls soccer coach, according to athletic director Fred Lee. Lance Hart has stepped down after five years in the position. The Bulldogs weren’t highly competitive in that span, but Lee mentioned that Hart didn’t have an overabundance of elite players. “The reports from the referees, though, were always posistive about their character and their behavior,” Lee said. Machado out as Moanalua boys soccer coach

Spencer Machado, who spent 26 years as the Moanalua boys soccer coach, will not return to that post next season. Moanalua athletic director Joel Kawachi confirmed on Tuesday that the school is looking for a new coach. Machado won numerous OIA divisional titles, but never won the overall OIA championship. Castle’s Tanigawa to play soccer at Chaminade

Castle girls soccer defender Alyssa Tanigawa signed a national letter of intent to play for Chaminade next year, the Silverswords announced Friday. Tanigawa is a two-time All-OIA first-team selection and was the Knights’ team captain for the past two years. She also captained her club team, the Eastside Storm, from 2011 to ’14, and is the captain of her current team, Leahi 97 Premier.
