Poi Report: Vakameilalo wanted coast to coast

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2013

Kapolei’s Kalani Vakameilalo has gotten the letters and phone calls. He’s nearly an NCAA Clearinghouse qualifier, which is good news for more than 10 colleges that want his services as a football player. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle is on the board as a target at schools in the Mountain West and all the way to the East Coast. Among the scholarship offers: Arizona State, Boise State, Kansas, Nevada, Pitt, San Diego State, Washington State and Wyoming. There’s more; that’s […]

Fehoko adds Louisville, Vandy to list of offers

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2013

The list keeps growing for Farrington junior Breiden Fehoko. Louisville and Vanderbilt became the latest universities to offer the 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive tackle scholarships. Fehoko and fellow defensive lineman Motu Heimuli helped the Governors defeat Kahuku 21-7 on Thursday to claim the top seed in the OIA Red East. Fehoko has a 4.0 grade-point average.

Trench Warfare 3: Fehoko vs. Mapuhi

By Jerry Campany on October 4, 2013

Farrington’s Breiden Fehoko vs. Kahuku’s Keala Mapuhi The third installment of Trench Warfare looks like a mismatch. On one side, Farrington’s Breiden Fehoko holds court among his teammates, getting them pumped up for the clash. On the other, Kahuku’s Keala Mapuhi quietly goes about his preparations. This matchup looks very much like Akebono vs. Konishiki, with Fehoko’s athleticism packed into a 6-foot-3, 280-pound package trying to maneuver around Mapuhi’s 300-plus pounds on a 6-foot frame. Fehoko, a junior, is one […]

By Paul Honda on September 6, 2013

Punahou shortstop Beau Branton has orally committed to Stanford. “I found out that I was officially admitted today,” Branton said on Thursday morning. “I feel pretty awesome. It’s one of the best feelings ever.” There was interest from other schools, but Branton narrowed his choices to Stanford, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Penn and Dartmouth. “Stanford is a place with the highest standards for academics and athletics. It doesn’t get much better than that,” said Branton, who played with the Utah Bucks […]

Kaiser’s Fisiiahi headed to Oregon State

By Billy Hull on September 4, 2013

Kaiser linebacker Fitou Fisiiahi told the Star-Advertiser’s Paul Honda on Wednesday night that he has committed to play football at Oregon State next season. “One hundred percent,” he said. “I’m not going to change my mind. They came here to see me. They offered me first.” Fisiiahi was considered a soft commit to the University of Hawaii, but was open with the coaching staff about exploring other options. He also had offers from Nevada, Utah and Washington State and was […]

Fisiiahi to visit USC

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2013

Fitou Fisiiahi would look great in green and white. He’d be the first to agree. But for now, the Kaiser linebacker/running back/punter is keeping all doors open. A Scout.com report that listed the 6-foot, 235-pound senior as a verbal commit to Hawaii, is off center. “I’d like to keep my options open,” he told me on Tuesday afternoon. As he told the Star-Advertiser on Aug. 2, he has a handful of offers and no concrete decision. In fact, Fisiiahi told […]

By Billy Hull on August 26, 2013

Scout.com has updated its list of the top 15 high school football recruits for the Class of 2014 from Hawaii. Leading the way is uncommitted Kahuku defensive end Lamone Williams, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds. Six of the next seven listed are thought to be committed to the University of Hawaii, although that could change for a couple of recruits, most notably Kaiser linebacker Fitou Fisiiahi. The only player in the top 15 headed to the mainland […]

Saint Louis’ Yamamoto headed to Arizona

By Billy Hull on August 21, 2013

Saint Louis senior Jordan Yamamoto has given an oral commitment to play baseball at the University of Arizona, he said Wednesday night. Yamamoto called Arizona his “dream school from his freshman year” and earned a nice scholarship offer after topping out at 92-93 MPH at the Area Code tryouts for the Milwaukee Brewers at Westmont College in Montecito, Calif. Yamamoto immediately received interest from a host of colleges, including Oregon, Utah and Loyola Marymount. Once the Wildcats came calling and […]
