Poi Report: Kapolei’s Kapoi commits to Wisconsin

Kapolei offensive lineman Micah Kapoi has committed to play football for the University of Wisconsin. Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez confirmed the announcement by phone on Sunday night. “Micah committed to play center/guard for the Wisconsin Badgers of the Big Ten. He is looking to major in business and was very impressed by their business school,” Hernandez wrote on his Facebook page. Kapoi, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior, also plays basketball.

The senior cornerback’s stellar season was icing on the cake for recruiters. Colorado liked him back in the summer, when Sanchez participated in the All-Poly Camp. She’s only a sophomore, but Konawaena basketball and volleyball standout Chanelle Molina is already on the University of Hawaii’s wish list. Molina, a Star-Advertiser all-state Fab 15 selection as a freshman last year, has been offered a basketball scholarship by the Rainbow Wahine. Enriques signs with Stanford

Three-time Star-Advertiser all-state outside hitter Evan Enriques of Kamehameha-Hawaii signed a letter of intent to attend Stanford on Wednesday afternoon. Enriques, who was the state player of the year as a sophomore, follows a trail blazed by many all-state players from the islands including Kawika Shoji, Erik Shoji and Spencer McLachlin.

Baseball, volleyball standouts sign letters

Eight volleyball players and eight baseball players were among the signees at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance letter-of-intent signing event this morning at Elks Lodge Waikiki. In all, 29 student-athletes signed letters, including record-breaking swimmer Jasmine Mau of Punahou. Kapolei defensive tackle Kalani Vakameilalo had his mind on Oregon State. Now the Beavers have his oral commitment. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior committed to OSU on Wednesday night, Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez confirmed. Kapolei linebacker/defensive end Kingston Fernandez has been offered a football scholarship by Arizona State. Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez confirmed the offer this afternoon. Fernandez is a 6-foot-3, 245-pound senior who is an NCAA academic qualifier, the coach added. Also, Kapolei defensive tackle Kalani Vakameilalo has also been made an offer by Arizona State. Vakameilalo (6-4, 290) has offers from Boise State, Kansas, Nevada, Pitt, San Diego State, Washington State and Wyoming.
