Top Players: QBs 8/21

By Paul Honda on August 21, 2013

I used to post updates (last year) every two weeks or so, with all positions in one post. Not anymore. Better to get as much data as possible and be deliberate. It’s tough enough with positions that have statistics available. When it gets to linemen, that turns more into art than science and I look for expert guidance. For now, a look at quarterbacks. I went on and on about the top QBs in the preseason top prospects list that […]

By Paul Honda on April 18, 2013

Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance and Elks Lodge of Waikiki hosted a letter of intent signing ceremony on Wednesday morning. More than 30 signees participated in the event. Among the seniors ready to start college was volleyball standout Kupono Fey of Punahou. But unlike his peers, the 6-foot-6 senior was at home. He had contracted pinkeye the day before the ceremony. “I love the team and the coaches,” he said by phone on Wednesday. “The recruiting class is great. A lot […]

Extended: Mililani QB Jarin Morikawa

By Paul Honda on November 6, 2012

(Here’s the longer/extended/expanded version of this morning’s feature story on Mililani quarterback Jarin Morikawa.) The DNA of four-wide, shotgun formations is not easily decoded. From teacher to disciple, one generation down to the next, the eureka moment for any pupil is discovered not in a flash, but in this unusual, but exquisite way. The student must be willing to teach, as well. From Mouse Davis to Ron Lee. From Ron Lee to brother Cal Lee to Vinnie Passas. To Darnell […]

Top Players 10/12

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2012

No major changes, just some shuffling. Late season is always a tough time to gauge as banged-up standouts plod forward through nagging injuries and soreness. The postseason separates the good from the average and the great from the rest. But I’ll always keep in mind the players whose teams just couldn’t make the playoffs. A lot of guys in that scenario. Good players. Update Tuesday, Oct. 16: Removes Apao (Kamehameha), not a starter. OFFENSIVE LINE Player School Ht. Wt. Yr. […]
