Monday morning in Waipahu

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2012

It’s steamy, sticky mid-morning in Waipahu. Vog has blanketed the island for days and nobody’s in a great mood. I pull into a certain well-known eatery. Can’t say it’s a local favorite, but it’s there in the middle of Y-Pahu. The cashier is a bit gruff, but quick and nice enough. “Hash brown? That’s all?” I’m waiting for the Nagaseu brothers, who live down the road a few blocks. We’ll eat together in a few minutes, so a hash brown […]

Top Players 10/3

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2012

It’s been nearly two weeks since the last installation of Top Players. It’s been an intriguing season with many ups and downs, adjustments from week to week, play to play. More and more, the best players are proving that their plays contribute to success. But there are many players who are among the best even if their teams are not having great success. As always, your input is welcome. The more eyes, the better. Update, Thursday: Adds Kala Ikeda, Konawaena, […]

Adding Machine: Receivers (Sept 27)

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2012

If you let go of preconceptions, expectations and assumptions, this is what you have. Nobody has been a prolific, deadly long threat like Kanawai Noa. Nobody has surprised with a consistency of big plays like Dylan Pakau. After that, we don’t have a lot of surprises. But there’s plenty of time left for that. A lot of that. Here’s a look at receivers after six weeks in no particular order. RECEIVERS Kanawai Noa, Punahou 40 receptions, 887 yards 12 touchdowns […]

Adding Machine: Running Backs (Sept 27)

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2012

Numbers are facts? Numbers are lies? For the most part, numbers are numbers. A team that relies almost exclusively on running the football won’t necessarily rack up two or three players with big stats. It doesn’t work that way. No more than a team with intentions of passing the ball exclusively is guaranteed to have a 3,000-yard passer. Yet, somehow, some way, Farrington is not the only team on its way to having a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. The fact […]

Adding Machine: Quarterbacks (Sept 26)

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2012

Week 7 is upon us. Here’s a look at individual numbers through the first six weeks. After all, not all stats are created equally. (Players listed in no particular order.) QUARTERBACKS Kahoali‘i Karratti, Konawaena 81-for-147 (.551) 1,709 yards 26 TD 3 INT Yards per attempt: 11.62 Passer rating: 207.04 The skinny: His passer rating is second in the state, but it’s tough to gauge his performance when the BIIF has some of the smallest programs in the islands. He’s sat […]

Catching that ‘Ahi

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2012

Word is getting around about Kaiser’s rugby/football dynamo, Fitou Fisiiahi. Utah and Oregon State have made scholarship offers to the 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior, who is playing on an injured foot that may require surgery after the season. Yet, his stunning acceleration and penchant for explosive plays as a linebacker and running back are matched by few. Couple that with his success in the classroom — a 3.4 grade-point average and college-qualifying test scores — and he’s becoming a magnet for […]
