By Jerry Campany on May 6, 2020

On this day in 1966, Kamehameha was primed to show its stuff in track and field. There were no records broken in the trials, but the Warriors qualified full contingent. They beat Duncan MacDonald‘s Kailua squad by 18 points the next day to take the team crown. Kailua’s MacDonald was the big star, breaking the ROIA record in the mile the week before following it with the state meet-record. He was only a junior. Other records broken the next day […]

By Jerry Campany on May 6, 2020

On this day in 1914, the Kamehameha baseball team looked unbeatable. Mills College proved otherwise. Denichi Takeuchi provided the highlight of the 5-2 upset, stealing third and home to provide the telling run. Takeuchi grew up to become an influential person in Japan, taking that country’s Olympic team on a tour of the Americas. The loss took more out of Kamehameha than it was supposed to, as Punahou went on to win the ILH for the third straight year, the […]

May 5, 1925: Organization brings all islands together

By Jerry Campany on May 5, 2020

Although the HHSAA wasn’t born until 1956, the Hawaii Interscholastic Federation was born out of many of the same ideas. On this day in 1925, the HIF was formed temporarily to create games in all sports between schools of every island. The first rule it drew up was requiring athletes to be under 21 years of age and restricting them to four seasons. The organization was given the OK in 1926 and immediately formed a football schedule that included McKinley, […]

On this day in 2017, Kamehameha’s Payton Bosque scored four goals and added an assist as the Warriors continued their mastery of Kahuku with a 5-1 win in the semifinals of the state tournament. Kamehameha predictably lost to nemesis Punahou in the state final but Bosque ended her career as the school’s second leading scorer in the state tournament with 27. Only Nanea Fujiyama had more with 36. Bosque is still the third-leading scorer in tournament history, behind No. 2 […]

MAY 5, 2003: Classification comes closer to reality

By Jerry Campany on May 5, 2020

On this day in 2003, everyone had an opinion on classification in prep sports. HHSAA boss Keith Amemiya announced that he would put up $20,000 to give classification a try for a year and KHNL general manager John Fink said he would match that number in air time for small-school football. That didn’t go over well with some, including OIA chief Dwight Toyama and Waimea AD Jim Kitamura. Kitamura teamed up with his girls volleyball coach, Doc Arrington, to present […]

On this day in 1988, Michael Kato and Waianae eased into the second round of the state tournament with a no-hitter over five innings. The Seariders won 4-0 in five innings when the game was called because of rain. The short outing didn’t help Kato in semifinals, though, as he got roughed up by Kamehameha for eight runs on seven hits (including two home runs) before the fourth inning. The four days of action began at 10 a.m. and didn’t […]
