LIVE BLOG: Kailua vs. Leilehua hoops

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2014

OIA Red girls basketball playoff game is close to tip-off. Kailua, which ousted Waianae on Tuesday, will play Leilehua here at Mililani’s gym. The second game pits Mililani and dangerous Radford. I say dangerous because Radford’s strength is its bigs. This is the “safe” round where a loss doesn’t mean the season is over. The OIA has six state-touranment berths, so tonight’s winners advance to the semifinals. All four of those teams will earn state berths. Tonight’s losers stay alive […]

Roundball Wrap 1/22

By Paul Honda on January 22, 2014

Well, well, it’s playoff season, which in some minds is an entirely different deal from the regular season. That’s understandable. Playoffs. Even when scores aren’t lower, it still comes down to percentages. Getting good shots. Minimizing turnovers. Making free throws. FREE THROWS! That was clearly a factor on Tuesday night when Waianae visited Kailua. The home team hit 24 of its 38 attempts (63 percent), which isn’t too bad. Waianae? The visitors were 8-for-24 from the line (33 percent) and […]

LIVE BLOG: #9 ‘Iolani vs. #2 Punahou

By Paul Honda on January 18, 2014

Originally, this girls basketball game was scheduled at Punahou, but an ILH wrestling meet is occupying Hemmeter Fieldhouse today. The game was moved to Mid-Pacific, which is where I went at first. But the game is going to be on TV, and to make that happen, it was moved to Kamehameha as the front side of a girls-boys doubleheader. The nightcap game is between the boys of MPI and Kamehameha (7 p.m.). I haven’t asked yet why it’s at Kamehameha, […]

LIVE BLOG: #1 Punahou at #2 Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on January 17, 2014

It’s an interesting night of prep hoops. Over at Kalaheo, Farrington brings a depleted team. Starters Jacob McEnroe and Mason Semisi, their two best rebounders and interior scorers, are gone to the continent for a Poly All-American exhibition football game. That’s good news for Kalaheo, a smart, young team that doesn’t have a lot of brawn. Here at Maryknoll, the parking lot has been busy and the gym is filled to the gills. Maryknoll’s girls just beat Sacred Hearts 49-21. […]

Robinson starts all-star hoops twinbill

By Paul Honda on January 14, 2014

Geremy Robinson saw a void, and now he’s hoping to get it filled. The former University of Hawaii basketball player is organizing the ILH-OIA senior girls and boys all-star doubleheader, which will be held on March 2 at Moanalua High School. “We want to get some respect for boys basketball in the community, to raise awareness of the players out here. They don’t get enough recognition,” Robinson said. Robinson said the top 10 seniors from the ILH and OIA will […]

Pupule’s girls hoops ballot 1/13

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2014

Ahead of tomorrow’s Star-Advertiser girls basketball Top 10, here’s how I voted. Pupule’s ballot BKG 1/13/14 1. LAH (21-1) 2. PUN (8-2) 3. MS (14-2) 4. KS (10-3) 5. ROS (11-2) 6. MIL (17-2) 7. KON (18-3) 8. HIL (12-5) 9. IOL (10-6) 10. HON (18-9) Summary: The Lady Lunas’ 51-50 win over Punahou may not mean a thing to the HHSAA seeding committee come February. For me, it’s the difference on my ballot. Punahou is on a roll after […]

Hoops notebook

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2014

There are some headliner names in the world of ILH Division II basketball. For a few years, it’s been St. Francis, which won the state crown last year with 6-foot-5 Matthew Nuumanaia playing multiple roles. This winter, Damien has been on fire with 6-7 center Kapi‘ina King patrolling the paint. Neither has surprised like Hawaii Baptist. The Eagles knocked off St. Francis 49-48 on Tuesday at the Saints’ gym. On Friday, HBA upended Damien 51-48 and rose to 3-0 in […]
