Originally, this girls basketball game was scheduled at Punahou, but an ILH wrestling meet is occupying Hemmeter Fieldhouse today. The game was moved to Mid-Pacific, which is where I went at first.
But the game is going to be on TV, and to make that happen, it was moved to Kamehameha as the front side of a girls-boys doubleheader. The nightcap game is between the boys of MPI and Kamehameha (7 p.m.).
I haven’t asked yet why it’s at Kamehameha, but my guess is that the trailer that houses OC16’s equipment has a much easier route and space here at Kekuhaupio Gym. Whatever the case, the girls game is set to tip off in 10 minutes.
Punahou won the first meeting between the teams 54-36 at ‘Iolani on Dec. 28. And while I was at MPI an hour or so ago, Kamehameha led the Lady Owls 29-11, not sure which quarter.
Punahou 12, ‘Iolani 3, end Q1
Buffanblu dominating the boards. Keau Fey has four points and seven rebounds already. Tyra Moe with six points.
Punahou 26, ‘Iolani 10, halftime
Buffanblu continue to dominate in the paint. Fey has 12 rebounds, two blocks and six points. Moe has three blocks. The Raiders are still running that weave style offense, looking for openings off the dribble, but they aren’t getting separation very often from Punahou’s defenders. Jade Botelho has nine points for the Raiders.
Punahou 42, ‘Iolani 23, end Q3
Raiders got the lead down to 15, but couldn’t keep the run going.
