LIVE BLOG: Kailua vs. Leilehua hoops

OIA Red girls basketball playoff game is close to tip-off. Kailua, which ousted Waianae on Tuesday, will play Leilehua here at Mililani’s gym. The second game pits Mililani and dangerous Radford. I say dangerous because Radford’s strength is its bigs.

This is the “safe” round where a loss doesn’t mean the season is over. The OIA has six state-touranment berths, so tonight’s winners advance to the semifinals. All four of those teams will earn state berths. Tonight’s losers stay alive in the consolation bracket, competing for the final two state berths. A possible trip to Maui or the Big Island is in reach.

Leilehua 15, Kailua 11, end Q1
Mules cold from the 3-point arc, but Jerri Maluyo banked in a 3 at the buzzer.

Leilehua 28, Kailua 25, half
Mules have slowed the tempo to a crawl, almost getting 10-second violations because they walk it up so slowly. The pace is good for Kailua, which looks just a wee bit tired after yesterday’s frantic pace in the win over Waianae.

Delcie Williams looks fresh; she’s got 12 points.

Kailua 38, Leilehua 36, end Q3
Surfriders’ defensive pressure in halfcourt is working on the Mules, who (I think) have played into Kailua’s hands by slowing the pace too much.

Kailua 49, Leilehua 46, final
Delcie Williams led the Surfriders with 21 points. Jerri Maluyo had 15 for the Mules, who move into the consolation bracket.
