Waianae has its new head football coach

Walter Young is the new varsity football coach at Waianae High School. Young is a 10-year member of the coaching staff, including the last two as junior varsity head coach. “We really wanted to hire somebody in house,” athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said. “He’s been through the system. He knows the kids and what we expect in the athletic program at Waianae.” Young replaces the recently departed Daniel Matsumoto, who stepped down last week after 15 years as head coach. […]

Christman signs as preferred UW walk-on

Punahou tight end Matthew Christman signed his letter of intent and will be a preferred walk-on at Washington, Buffanblu coach Kale Ane confirmed Wednesday. Christman, a 6-foot-3, 235-pounder, caught seven passes for 127 yards and a TD during Punahou’s ILH championship season that ended with a loss to Mililani in the state title game. In other late signing news Wednesday, Kamehameha offensive lineman Radson Jang selected Army, and Punahou defensive back Robert Straton chose Dartmouth.


PIAA LOI Day: Uluave signs with Cal

Punahou all-state offensive lineman Semisi Uluave signed a letter of intent with the University of California at Berkeley this morning at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance ceremony. Uluave, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound senior, opted for Cal over several other programs, including Oregon. “I felt like Cal is the best fit for me, and it’s the No. 1 public university in the country, in the world,” he said. Tagovailoa gets offer No. 8

Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received offer No. 8 from a college last week, according to a post by Doris Sullivan on the Pacific Islands Atheletic Alliance website last week. One problem for those schools, however, is they have to wait. Tagovailoa is only a sophomore and has two years of high school football left. Savea picks SDSU; Gilman to sign at PIAA

Kapolei offensive lineman Pesi Savea chose San Diego State over Texas Tech, according to a Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance website post Tuesday night. Savea had been waiting for some test scores to come in and now he is eligible to sign his letter of intent for the Aztecs at Wednesday’s PIAA signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki. Hawaii Prep’s Palleschi to sign with Cal

Three Hawaii Prep athletes will sign their national letters of intent at the Big Island school’s gym Wednesday at 3 p.m., according to athletic director Steve Perry. Nicky Palleschi, a 6-4, 200-pounder, played tight end, wide receiver and defensive end for Ka Makani. He will sign with Cal. Gabbie Ewing will sign to play for Concordia (Portland, Ore.) soccer and Bri Vallente will sign to play for Peninsula (Port Angeles, Wash.) soccer.

It appears the indecision is done and Kahuku two-way standout Salanoa-Alo Wily will be signing with UNLV on Wednesday morning, according to a trusted source close to OIA football. Another Kahuku star, linebacker Soli Afalava, will be joining him with the Rebels, the source said Tuesday. Both had previously committed to Hawaii.
