Walter Young is the new varsity football coach at Waianae High School.

Young is a 10-year member of the coaching staff, including the last two as junior varsity head coach.

“We really wanted to hire somebody in house,” athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said. “He’s been through the system. He knows the kids and what we expect in the athletic program at Waianae.”

Young replaces the recently departed Daniel Matsumoto, who stepped down last week after 15 years as head coach.

Young graduated from Waianae in 1998 after playing for then-coach Leo Taaca. He is a math teacher at the school.

Tokunaga had conversations last week with other Waianae alums, including UH assistant coach and former NFL linebacker Kurt Gouveia. The discussions didn’t materialize into anything more than that, he said.
