BIIF and MIL 8-man FB leagues ready to start

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation 8-man football league will open the 2016 season on Saturday, Aug. 27, when Ka‘u visits Pahoa at 1 p.m. The Maui Interscholastic League 8-man football starts on Sept. 16, when Lanai visits Hana for a 6 p.m. game. The two leagues’ defending champions are Kohala (BIIF) and Molokai (MIL). Previous league champions were Ka‘u (2014, BIIF) and Seabury Hall (2013 and 2014, MIL). Hawaii High School Football Recruiting Tracker A couple of recruiting tidbits. Waianae’s Kanai Mauga, a junior defensive end listed at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, told me Sunday that he has received a scholarship offer from Oregon State. Mauga was a beast against Kapolei last Saturday. He completely blew up the right tackle blocking him on the Hurricanes’ first two passing plays and was then double-teamed for most of the game. CBS MaxPreps came out with its latest national computer rankings Sunday, and if you want to know where your Hawaii team stacks up, you can check it out here. Two of the main characters in what turned out to be a mini drama on Monday were absolutely correct: Tua Tagovailoa was at practice Tuesday, just as his dad, Galu Tagovailoa, and his head coach, Cal Lee, said he would be.
