Crusaders win, but seek penalty-free perfection

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2017

Cal Lee was in good spirits after Saint Louis’ 38-2 win over Kamehameha on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Facing elimination from ILH title contention and state-tourney qualification, Kamehameha was resilient in the trenches. Saint Louis didn’t give up a point, stopping the Warriors in the red zone multiple times. Lee was unusually proud of the defensive teamwork. “The kids can rest, get rejuvenated, get excited to come back and play in the state tournament. That’s a goal you shoot […]

Saint Louis’ Tuitele plays through elbow injury

By Christian Shimabuku on October 21, 2017

Saint Louis’ defense was effective again on Saturday night, with the only points it squandered being a safety by the offense. Backup quarterback Maika Bonner was sacked in the end zone, breaking up a shutout for the Crusaders. But the defense did its job, allowing just 137 total yards in a one-sided 38-2 victory over Kamehameha at Aloha Stadium to clinch its third straight ILH Division I title. Noa Purcell recovered a blocked punt in the first quarter, adding to […]

VIDEO: Saints’ tying TD, controversial PAT

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2017

Bubba Akana‘s game-tying touchdown pass to Scott McLeod with 1:10 remaining brought St. Francis back into a 14-all tie with Damien, but it was the beginning of a confusing situation when Damien’s Matt Faufata-Pedrina appeared to block the ensuing PAT kick. Damien was penalized for roughing the kicker. St. Francis went on to convert the next PAT attempt en route to a 15-14 playoff win. The teams will meet again next Friday for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II […]

McLeod saves St. Francis’ season with 1 play

By Christian Shimabuku on October 21, 2017

Time stood still for a few seconds at Aloha Stadium with St. Francis’ season hanging in the balance. Down by six points to Damien with 1:10 left, Saints junior quarterback Bubba Akana lofted a deep ball to Scott McLeod, who had a one-on-one matchup down the left sideline. The physically imposing McLeod, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, streaked down the field and simply snatched the ball at the 10-yard line, where he eased his way to pay dirt. […]

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2017

The No. 1-ranked Saint Louis Crusaders can wrap up a third consecutive ILH championship with a win over Kamehameha. The Warriors played the Crusaders tough three weeks ago in a 23-12 loss and snapped a 10-game losing streak to Punahou last week in a 44-31 win to save their season. Safety Kalamaku Kuewa, who missed the Punahou game while on a baseball trip, is expected to play and the Warriors should be at full go. NO. 4 KAMEHAMEHA WARRIORS (4-4) […]

GAME NIGHT 10/21: Damien/St. Francis

By Hawaii Prep World on October 21, 2017

The Monarchs won the first meeting in an instant classic, coming back from 13 down in the third quarter to score 20 unanswered points and win 20-7. Two weeks ago, the Saints shut out Damien 19-0 to end the ILH first round. Nothing was on the line in that game. Was it a sign of things to come, or were the Monarchs laying low, waiting for this one? Kickoff is 3 p.m. Q&A: St. Francis coach Kip Akana ST. FRANCIS […]

Mililani’s dominance begins in the trenches

By Nick Abramo on October 21, 2017

We all know how good Kahuku’s offensive line is nearly every year, and the same goes for Mililani. But over in Central Oahu this year, they seem to have found something extra special with this version of the Trojans’ offensive line. The unit owned the line of scrimmage against what is considered a tough Waianae defense on Friday night and it spurred a 42-6 victory in the Oahu Interscholastic Association D-I semifinals and a spot in the title game against […]

State berth still in play for Waianae and Campbell

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 21, 2017

Before Kahuku and Mililani play for the OIA Division I championship, Waianae and Campbell meet in a game of survival. The Seariders and Sabers were on the short end of lopsided semifinal games on Friday at Aloha Stadium and have two weeks to prepare for their matchup for the OIA’s third and final spot in the open division of the HHSAA/First Hawaiian Bank State Football Championships. “We have two more weeks, we’re going to prepare because we want play somebody […]
