Kahuku, Saint Louis advance to another showdown

By Nick Abramo on November 11, 2017

One player was just trying to circle around and get open. His opponent was trying to defend the run before switching gears to defend the pass. It was during one of two highly entertaining games of state Division I-Open semifinal football Friday night at Aloha Stadium, and the outcome of this one, the opener, was hanging in the balance as another player, Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, scrambled around. Maiava saw receiver Duke Heffernan alone in the middle of the end […]

Mililani’s quest: So close, yet so far

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2017

Last week, it was Kahuku in the Oahu Interscholastic Association title game. This week, it was defending state champion Saint Louis. For a second week in a row, the Mililani Trojans played unsurpassed football. Then, a mighty foe surpassed them. Mililani roared to a 23-10 lead, then saw Saint Louis ratchet up to a new level. The final score of Saint Louis’ 47-23 victory in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division State Championships doesn’t tell the whole […]

Saint Louis’ Quinn torches Mililani

By Christian Shimabuku on November 11, 2017

Mitchell Quinn was simply sensational on Friday night, turning a close game at the half into a rout with four third-quarter touchdowns in Saint Louis’ 47-23 win over Mililani in the Division I-Open semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium. Quinn finished with eight receptions for 307 yards and five TDs. He’s also a star on the Crusaders’ track team and constantly proved that he was simply too fast for the Mililani secondary. Each visit […]

Kahuku returns to title game with comeback win

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 10, 2017

When Sol-Jay Maiava was struggling on Friday night — whether with his command or his ankle — the Kahuku quarterback’s focus turned to family. “i just thought of my mom, that’s about it,” Maiava said. A week after Maiava threw a game-winning touchdown late in a shootout victory over Mililani in the OIA Division I championship game, the sophomore’s radar appeared misaligned for much of Friday’s state tournament semifinal matchup with Waianae. He completed seven of his first 31 pass […]

No regrets for Waianae’s Rosario

By Christian Shimabuku on November 10, 2017

Before the season started, Waianae senior Rico Rosario almost didn’t suit up for the Seariders. With his family set to move to Las Vegas, Rosario had a choice: play his senior season at Liberty High School in Henderson, Nev., or stay with his grandparents in Waianae. Rosario chose the latter and finished the season with 872 rushing yards on 162 carries and 12 touchdowns, including 25 carries for 86 yards in a 10-7 loss to Kahuku in the HHSAA Division […]

Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2017

Rod York doesn’t ask for precision and teamwork. He demands it. The former ‘Iolani and Hawaii defensive lineman is in his eighth season as head coach at Mililani. Through the ups and downs — mostly ups — York and his staff have been steadfast about learning. For York, the game is in his blood, and the quest for new knowledge never ends. The Trojans will meet top-seeded Saint Louis tonight in the semifinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open […]
