Q&A: Saint Louis football coach Cal Lee

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2017

The Saint Louis Crusaders are 8-0 with wins over some of the state’s finest teams. Punahou. Kamehameha. Waianae. Toss in a wild victory over Narbonne (Calif.) and they are No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10, and also the top seed in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division State Championships. They have outscored foes 360-104, and that resume includes Top 10 teams in seven of those eight games. For Cal Lee, none of that matters. Today’s matchup with Mililani […]

Kapolei DB invited to 2018 Polynesian Bowl

By Billy Hull on November 9, 2017

Kapolei senior Dylan Toilolo, who played on both offense and defense for the Hurricanes this season, has been invited to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. Toilolo, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety who has also played linebacker and running back, was an All-State first team selection as a junior linebacker at Saint Louis. He transferred to Kapolei just prior to the start of the season and helped the Hurricanes advance to the OIA quarterfinals before losing to Kahuku. He also dabbled at running […]

Pupule ballot: Fantastical coulda-been bowl games

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2017

There may be enough reason to believe Kahuku has 1) the No. 1 team in the state, 2) has the most balanced offense, 3) the best front seven, 4) the most clutch performances under time constraints. And yet, I keep voting for Saint Louis. I’m not 100-percent old school, but I usually list a defending state champion at No. 1 on my Star-Advertiser Top 10 ballot. So it was Saint Louis to start the football season, and the unbeaten Crusaders […]

Q&A: Waianae LB Kana‘i Mauga

By Paul Honda on November 7, 2017

From teammates to coaches to family, there’s love for a young student-athlete named Kana‘i Mauga. Coaches, including opposing gurus, hold the Waianae senior in very high esteem. Rod York of Mililani says Mauga is someone he’d be proud to call a son. Waianae coach Walter Young has the highest praise. “He has been a role model of a senior leader physically, mentally and emotionally. He shows up to the workout sessions and gives his all, and motivates and encourages his […]

Coaches chime in on Waianae’s Mauga

By Paul Honda on November 7, 2017

Within an hour of requests to opposing coaches, all had plenty to say about Waianae senior linebacker Kana‘i Mauga. It’s not rare to see coaches laud another team’s star player. It isn’t common, however, for them to notice the level of maturity and aloha, and that’s the case with Mauga. Here’s what coaches had to say about the 6-foot-2, 215-pound USC commit who carries a 3.2 grade-point average. He was the prep feature in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, which you can […]

Saint Louis no longer unanimous No. 1

By Billy Hull on November 6, 2017

ILH champion Saint Louis remained No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 today for the 15th consecutive week. The Crusaders are no longer a unanimous No. 1 team however. Kahuku, which responded to getting dropped to No. 3 last week with a 35-31 win over Mililani in the OIA title game on Saturday, moved back up to No. 2 and received one first-place vote heading into the semifinals of the Division I-Open state tournament on Friday. The Red […]

St. Louis has highest national ranking of season

By Billy Hull on November 6, 2017

The three weeks off between the ILH championship and semifinals of the Division I-Open state tournament have been good both on and off the field for Saint Louis. Healthy and rested heading into Friday’s game against Mililani at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium, the Crusaders have also raised their national profile. For the second straight week, the Crusaders have jumped two spots in the Max Preps Xcellent 25 and hold their highest ranking of the season at No. 21 in […]
