Sanchez is new Farrington football coach

Farrington athletic director Harold Tanaka said Wednesday that Daniel Sanchez is the new football coach for the Governors. He takes over for Randall Okimoto, who stepped down in March after 16 years at the helm. HPA hires Cummings as football coach

Hawaii Preparatory Academy hired Albert Cummings as its new football coach Friday, according to athletic director Steve Perry. “Albert brings great energy to the program and BIIF experience over the past couple of seasons,” Perry said. “I think Albert’s passion for the game will attract players to the field and get them excited to compete every day.” Cummmings is a 1996 Kailua graduate and former quarterback for the Surfriders. Kapolei to take first mainland football trip

Coach Darren Hernandez is bringing his Kapolei Hurricanes to the mainland for a football game for the first time this fall. The Hurricanes will be going to Downey, Calif., to play against the Downey High Vikings on Aug. 31. The trip will also include stops at Universal Studios and Six Flags Magic Mountain as well as campus tours of USC and UCLA. The Honolulu Advertiser ILH all-star team in 1952 featured three players who made it on both offense and defense — Punahou’s Donn Carswell, Roosevelt’s Henry George and Kamehameha’s Dan Fuller. Carswell and George were the only repeat selections form the previous season. ILH champion Kamehameha led the way with seven selections, including defensive end Alex Kane. ILH champion Farrington dominated the top awards in 1965 with quarterback Stanley Cadiente named back of the year and center Ambrose Costa winning lineman of the year honors from both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin. McKinley halfback John Coen was the only junior named to the first team by the Advertiser after setting an ILH record with 109 points in a season. Undefeated ILH champion Roosevelt finished with more than half of the players selected to the ILH football all-star first team chosen by the Honolulu Advertiser in 1957. Roosevelt halfback Milton Kam was the only repeat selection and Punahou junior tackle Lindsey Kinney and fullback Ben Samson were the only underclassmen to make the team. Saint Louis wide receiver Micah Matsuzaki led the way in 1988 as the offensive player of the year by both newspapers. Matsuzaki scored 11 touchdowns in 1988, including three on punt returns.
