After that, Mililani moved on to the state tournament and lost to Saint Louis, the same team that came back late to wind up with a 31-28 title-game win over Kahuku in the Open Division state championship. Kapolei, Mililani get work in during shortened scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on July 29, 2018

The good news is Kapolei and Mililani got to play a long, nearly 90-minute first half in a football scrimmage Saturday night. But there was bad news, too. After a 10-minute break, the teams came onto the field for the second half and the referees were gone. According to bystanders, the referees thought the game was over. Darren Hernandez, the Kapolei coach, was not happy about the referees’ disappearance. He wanted to get some work in for his other quarterbacks […]

Clemens and Paama meet in the trenches

By Jason Kaneshiro on July 28, 2018

Punahou and Kaimuki won’t meet again this season, but Saturday’s scrimmage might have been just the first in a series of matchups between Buffanblu senior Duke Clemens and the Bulldogs’ Sama Paama. Paama played on both sides of the Kaimuki line on Saturday, having committed to Washington back in April. Clemens, who spent most of the scrimmage at center for Punahou, went deeper into the summer before picking UCLA in mid-July, setting up potential rematches down the road. They didn’t […]

By Nick Abramo on July 28, 2018

11TH IN A SERIES Pearl City football has been highly successful for quite a while now, but there is a plateau that has proved to be insurmountable so far. The Chargers are nearly always contending for a title and have made several appearances in the state tournament this decade. However, championships are not on the resume yet. “Last year, we were happy we got into the (OIA Division II) championship game,” coach Robin Kami said. “This year, we’re going back […]

Pass-happy Kahuku shows up at Waipahu

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2018

Wesley Alo-Maiava had a spectacular first play Friday. The Kahuku running back took it to the house — an 80-yard run — on the first play of the Red Raiders’ scrimmage against Waipahu. After finding the end zone, he immediately lifted his hands toward the Waipahu bench and gave a wave. “That was to all the Waipahu kids,” Alo-Maiava said. “Let them know we’re here.” It was not a show of cockiness as much as it was a release of […]
