Two returning award winners from last year — Campbell’s Poki’i Adkins-Kupukaa, who won the Herman Wedemeyer Award as the state’s best two-way player, and Saint Louis defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele, who won the Olin Kreutz Award as the state’s top lineman — will attempt to join former Saint Louis […]

A little courage takes Konawaena long way

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2018

The first reaction was shock. Then came resolve. At Konawaena, football has always been tradition, going back to the dynasty — 12 BIIF titles in a row from 1980 to ’91 — and the success in the 26 seasons since. But traveling off-island to take on the Goliath on his home turf — Kahuku — is completely off the charts. The Wildcats, 9-3-1 last season, and OIA defending champion Red Raiders kick off on Saturday, 6 p.m., at Carleton Weimer […]

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2018

13TH IN A SERIES For two seasons under coach Savai’i Eselu, Moanalua has been a playoff team. He’s trying to continue the trend and maybe go further. Two years ago, Na Menehune qualified for states but went down in the Division I (middle tier) first round in a 17-14 loss to ‘Iolani. Last year, there was a playoff win followed by a playoff loss, but no states. One good sign for Moanalua in this preseason was a strong performance against […]

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2018

Wendell Say feels fortunate that his Aiea football team’s game Friday night at Kaiser is a nonleague affair. Otherwise, he would not be able to do what he is about to do. Say is bringing the full JV squad of about 30 players up to suit up for the Kaiser varsity game. That’s because Na Alii’s varsity team would have fielded less about 18 players due to academic probation and injuries. So instead of barely fielding a team, Aiea will […]

He was 66. “Our players and community are saddened by the loss,” said Red Raiders head coach Sterling Carvalho, who will start his first season as the varsity head coach Saturday night at home against Konawaena. “He will be missed greatly.
