On this date in 1944, the Farrington Governors won their first football title. The Governors had clinched the championship weeks earlier, but made it official with a 33-0 win over Punahou in front of 5,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Farrington finished the season with a perfect record. On this date in 1990, Danielle Robins of University injured her left knee in a state volleyball semifinal sweep of Kamehameha and had to sit out the championship a few hours later. Robins had something to cheer about at the end of the evening. In a reminder of what we are missing, on this date last year Kalei Akagi popped two big scores and Leilehua beat Baldwin 34-7 in the opening round of the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium. Akagi scored on a 72-yard reverse to begin the game and later broke the plane on a 91-yard kick return. Sophomore Jemell Vereen rushed for 174 yards and the Mules defense stepped up with a score. On this date in 2002, Castle won its first OIA championship since 1945. The Knights shut out surprised rival Kailua 25-0 at Aloha Stadium. Castle lost 20-0 in the regular season meeting with the Surfriders. Jared Suzui gave Castle all the points they needed on an 82-yard punt return in the second quarter. On this date in 1970, Damien scored with 45 seconds left and converted the extra points to deny Iolani its first win with a 22-22 deadlock. Damien was denied its second victory. The Monarchs trailed 22-16 when Roger Kurt hit Tony Narvaes for a 23-yard touchdown. It was only a few years after Roger Maris and Babe Ruth, but McKinley’s John “Cyclone” Coen never had to worry about an asterisk. On this date in 1965, Coen scored two touchdowns and McKinley beat Saint Louis 20-0 in front of a crowd of 6,371 at Honolulu Stadium. On this date in 1982, Lakei Heimuli shrugged off a hamstring injury and Kahuku beat Farrington 7-0 to win the OIA East title in front of 11,229 wet fans at Aloha Stadium. Red Raiders coach Clarence Lavarias told the media before the game that linebacker Sekeli Wily would be moving to the offense. He kept his word, but Heimuli still received the bulk of the carries. On this date in 1929, Hilo traveled to Maui and left with a lot to talk about on the trip home. Hilo beat Maui 7-6 in the game at the Kahului Fairgrounds, but it went down to the last seconds.
