ON THIS DATE IN 2019: Kalei Akagi full of big plays for Leilehua

In a reminder of what we are missing, on this date last year Kalei Akagi popped two big scores and Leilehua beat Baldwin 34-7 in the opening round of the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium.

Akagi scored on a 72-yard reverse to begin the game and later broke the plane on a 91-yard kick return. Sophomore Jemell Vereen rushed for 174 yards and the Mules defense stepped up with a score.

The Mules left Maui with the victory and had to prepare for another road game in the semifinals. Their journey ended in Hilo, where they lost 19-9 to the top-seeded Vikings.

Vereen ran for 124 yards in that game, but Akagi was limited to one catch but did complete a pass. The Mules would have jumped to the Open Division this year with Akagi returning for his senior year.

    I was Curious to see Leilehua in the Open this year;
    They have some solid returnees.
