By Billy Hull on September 11, 2015

Six days after its impressive come-from-behind victory over Del Oro in California, the Punahou Buffanblu are back home to kick off the 2015 ILH season. The four-time defending league champions head down the road to face ‘Iolani, which makes its Division I debut after dominating in Division II for over a decade. The Buffanblu have won 14 of the last 16 meetings and have scored at least 56 points in each of the last three games against the Raiders. Field […]

By Billy Hull on September 11, 2015

If it seems like the OIA season has been going on for a month while the ILH hasn’t kicked off yet, you’re right. Four weeks after the OIA began regular-season play, the ILH season kicks off with three games this weekend. ‘Iolani makes its Division I debut since dominating Division II play for the last 10 years hosting Punahou. Here’s a look at Friday’s games: ILH No. 2 Punahou (3-0) at ‘Iolani (2-1), 3:15 p.m. >> From the first Prep […]

From winless to wonderful: 2001 Roosevelt

By Jerry Campany on September 10, 2015

There are no meaningless games, as Chris Mols and other former Roosevelt players know all too well. The Rough Riders of 2000 finished their season in the OIA Red winless and largely without hope, drawing unbeaten Waianae in the last game of the year. Roosevelt had been shut out five times in eight games before that and scored three touchdowns only once — two of them on defense — a 34-21 loss to Farrington. The Rough Riders were predictably rolled […]

From winless to wonderful: 1980 Mililani

By Jerry Campany on September 10, 2015

Inspired by the current Kailua squad, here is the third of the five football programs on Oahu since 1973 to follow a winless season with an over .500 record. 1980 Mililani, from 0-8-1 to 6-4 John Kauinana doesn’t have his name on a stadium for nothing. He won plenty of games over his career as Mililani’s head coach, but his best season might have been a .500 campaign. After winning seasons in 1977 and 1978, Kauinana’s 1979 squad started the […]

From winless to wonderful: 1993 McKinley

By Jerry Campany on September 10, 2015

With inspiration from the current Kailua squad, which is unbeaten after going winless last year, here is the second of five teams that enjoyed winning seasons after a winless campaign. 1993 McKinley, from 0-8-1 to 7-2 If the current McKinley squad needs some inspiration for next year, its coach knows where to find it. The OIA went to the Red-White-Blue format and the Tigers struggled in Tim Seaman‘s final year of two years at the helm, playing every game close […]

From winless to wonderful: 2000 Campbell

By Jerry Campany on September 9, 2015

Kailua is on to something special this season, starting off 5-0 after suffering through a winless campaign last year in coach Joe Wong’s first season. He knew things would get brighter after closing last year’s campaign with a one-point loss to Moanalua, his charges never got a win but got better every week. And then they made the jump over the summer. The Surfriders have won each of their games this year by more than a touchdown, but face Farrington […]

Radford gets most out of mainland trip

By Billy Hull on September 9, 2015

What team has traveled to the mainland more in the last four years to play a football game? Mililani? The Trojans just played on the mainland for the very first time. Saint Louis? It hasn’t traveled away from the islands since Timmy Chang was its quarterback. Punahou? Close. It has played on the mainland in three of the last five years. That honor belongs to the Radford Rams. Head coach Fred Salanoa takes his team to the state of Washington […]

Mililani’s Milton enters record book…again

By Billy Hull on September 8, 2015

Lost in the craziness of Mililani’s 76-53 defeat against Liberty last Friday was another Madden-like performance from quarterback McKenzie Milton. Milten recorded the third 400-yard passing game of his career — and second in as many weeks — and threw five touchdown passes for the Trojans, who lost for the first time since Milton’s sophomore year. Milton is 26-2 as Mililani’s starting QB, with the only other loss coming against Punahou in the 2013 state final. Four games into his senior […]
