4 teams tied for current longest win streak

By Nick Abramo on September 14, 2015

When the Liberty Patriots of Henderson, Nev., knocked off Mililani 76-53 on Sept. 4, it stopped the Trojans’ 16-game winning streak. And, so, what teams in Hawaii have the current longest roll? The answer: Kahuku, Farrington, Radford and Konawaena — all are 5-0 to start the 2015 season. The Trojans went 13-0 in 2014 and started off with three straight wins this season. Punahou and Kapaa are next in line at 4-0, and Saint Louis, Pac-Five and Damien are all […]

Bent but not broken: Asalemo brings heat

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2015

On paper, it was a phenomenal performance for two individuals in Saturday night’s Farrington-Kailua showdown. Challen Faamatau‘s 236 yards and three rushing TDs on 30 carries were his single-game personal bests. The 236-yard total, No. 6 on the Farrington all-time best list, is right behind the 245 yards produced by current Govs coach Randall Okimoto against Kailua 25 years ago. Kailua quarterback Noah Auld was scintillating at times with 23 completions in 31 attempts for 221 yards and a touchdown. […]

Vacant throne: ILH chase begins

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2015

When life gives Kip Botelho lemons, he always makes lemonade. The Pac-Five football coach faced a dilemma last week. Three offensive linemen suited up for practice and the rest were out with injuries. A fourth OL returned in time for last night’s game. How did they make do? Botelho has spent his career conjuring up ways to stay competitive while lining up hearty young players who don’t have the girth to dominate in the trenches. That’s why Ferreira, as a […]

LIVE BLOG: Saint Louis 31, Kamehameha 27

By Billy Hull on September 12, 2015

It was this regular season game last season between Saint Louis and Kamehameha that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa introduced himself to the Hawaii high school football scene. The Crusaders quarterback threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 172 yards and another score to lead the Crusaders to a wild 46-38 win. The teams open ILH Division I play this season in one of two regular season meetings between the schools. A third could potentially happen in the ILH […]

Leilehua’s field holds up

By Brian McInnis on September 12, 2015

When foul weather turned some fields across Oahu into soup on Friday, those fortunate enough to have artificial turf counted their blessings. The Leilehua Mules were among that group. Aside from some distant lightning raising a few concerns of postponement, Leilehua was able to go ahead with its game against Waipahu without a hitch. The Mules prevailed 38-0, improving to 2-2 in the OIA Red Conference. In the past, the Mules’ field was one of the most susceptible to turning […]

Kapolei recovers in vigorous defensive slugfest

By Nick Abramo on September 12, 2015

Close-to-the-vest, defensively played football is a rarity these days. So folks who headed west to see Campbell at Kapolei on Friday were treated to an old-school escapade in which the Hurricanes fought back for a 16-7 win to reach the .500 mark. Offenses be damned. This one was like a 1-0 baseball game won in the bottom of the ninth. Only 3 points were electronically zapped on to the scoreboard (and scoreboards are known for their 76-53 and 90-0 results […]

Banged up Punahou squad tested by ‘Iolani

By Billy Hull on September 12, 2015

It was thought that ‘Iolani would be the team to watch out for on the injury front as it makes the jump to Division I. Instead, it was Punahou that had to overcome some injury concerns to pull out a 59-22 win over the Raiders on Friday in a game that was close midway through the third quarter. Junior Nick Kapule had to quarterback the final three quarters for the Buffanblu with starter Ephraim Tuliloa knocked out of the game […]
