Corbett tops boys wrestling P4P rankings

Liam Corbett is starting the season on the top, staying there will be the tough part. Corbett, who took over the top spot in Hawaii Prep World’s boys pound-for-pound rankings after earning his second OIA title last year, is still in the top spot in this year’s initial tally. Alo faces big wrestling test in Las Vegas

Three-time state champion wrestler Teshya Alo left Monday for Las Vegas for one of her biggest tests yet. Alo will compete on Friday in the U.S. Senior Nationals and Trials Qualifier. If she places in the top six in the 58-kilogram (127.868 pounds) division there, she will compete in the Olympic Trials in April. Kaiser jumps to No. 2 in boys hoops poll

Kaiser moved up to No. 2 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10. The Cougars also received five first-place votes and jumped ahead of Punahou, which fell to No. 3. ‘Iolani stayed at No. 1. In the girls poll, No. 1 Konawaena — coming off an ‘Iolani Classic championship — received all 20 first-place votes. The top six teams remained the same. While Conor McGregor was making quick work of his opponent in a UFC title fight in Las Vegas, a pair of Moanalua wrestlers did the same at the Garner Ivey Invitational on Maui on Saturday. Caleb Garcia of Moanlaua had the fastest pin with an 18 second job on the boys side, and Na Menehune girl Khaitlin Bernaldez did even better by matching McGregor’s 13 seconds in a girls match. ‘Iolani’s Bailey Choy is the Gatorade Hawaii Volleyball Player of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Tuesday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-9 senior setter finished the season with 574 assists, 197 digs and 15 aces in leading the Raiders to the Division I state final. Colorado offers 2 Kahuku juniors

Kahuku’s historic defensive season in 2015 apparently has not gone unnoticed by major Division I college football coaches. Red Raiders cornerback Kekaula Kaniho and defensive lineman Aliki Vimahi picked up scholarship offers from Colorado on Monday night. Both Kahuku juniors posted the news on their Twitter accounts. Kaniho, a 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back, scored his first Division I offer while Vimahi, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end, also holds offers from Brigham Young and Oregon State. Punahou’s Lileikis commits to Cal

Punahou senior Aukai Lileikis gave his oral commitment to swim for Cal next year, according to Swimswam.com. Lileikis, who is also a member of the Aulea Swim Club, is gearing up for his senior season with the Buffanblu. Lileikis has three 2016 Olympic Trials qualifying times — in the 100 freestyle (50.65 seconds), the 200 free (50.65) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.29).
