Mililani celebrates Malepeai’s bowl invite

Friends and family of Vavae Malepeai gathered at the Mililani High School gym on Monday to celebrate the running back’s selection to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. ILH takes Oahu Interleague Showcase

TThe OIA may own the postseason, but the ILH has the edge in the preseason. Oahu’s private school league won the Oahu Interleague Showcase at Kapolei on Saturday, winning four matches to the OIA’s two with two ties. Last year the tournament came down to the final match, but this time the ILH clinched at least a tie when Punahou beat Kalani 2-1 and took the edge in the next-to-last match when Iolani beat Kalani 2-1. Kailua takes Surfrider Classic

The second week of tournament season in boys basketball wrapped up with a championship for Kailua. The Surfriders beat Mid-Pacific 53-38 to take the title in the Surfrider Classic. Getting to the final on their home floor was no easy feat, as Kailua needed double overtime to beat Baldwin 54-46 in the semifinals. Mid-Pacific beat St. Francis 57-51. Punahou and Saint Louis are the lone unbeatens after the first two days of the Jim Alegre Invitational at Radford. The Buffanblu beat Moanalua on Thursday and Tristan Nichols lit up Radford for 30 points in a win for Saint Louis. Punahou takes on Mililani today and the Crusaders meet Leilehua. Malepeai is Gatorade player of the year

Mililani senior running back Vavae Malepeai was chosen Tuesday as the Gatorade Hawaii Football Player of the Year. Malepeai led the state with 1,930 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 227 carries in 13 games. He also caught 10 passes for 171 yards and five touchdowns in leading the Trojans to an appearance in the state semifinals and a 10-3 overall record. It’s never too early for a state championship preview. Hawaii’s traditional boys soccer powers will converge on Kapolei for the Oahu Interscholastic Soccer Showcase over the next three days. State champion Mililani leads the field, but won’t get to ease into the tournament. The Trojans open with a 7 p.m. match against Punahou on Thursday. ‘Iolani and Konawaena are the boys and girls No. 1 teams in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 basketball polls that will be released in the Tuesday edition.
