Fred Salanoa is going out on top, stepping down as head coach of the Radford football team after 13 seasons. Salanoa’s Rams won the Division II state championship with a 30-16 victory over Kapaa on Nov. 20 at Aloha Stadium. Salanoa said he wants to spend more time with his family that includes seven daughters. “It’s time to move forward,” Salanoa said. “Any coach would probably be lying if he told you that he wouldn’t miss coaching. It’s time to […]

2015 All-State Fab 15 volleyball slide show

By Jerry Campany on November 29, 2015

Despite another in a long line of all-ILH state finals in girls volleyball, a bunch of new names led the way this year. ‘Iolani’s Bailey Choy was judged the best player in the state in the Star-Advertiser’s 2015 Fab 15 published on Sunday (subscription required), the first time a player was named player of the year from a team that failed to win the state title since Kanoe Kamanao was named the best in the land by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin […]

By Jerry Campany on November 29, 2015

With the Star-Advertiser’s All-State volleyball Fab 15 out today, here is a list of all of the teams for both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin over the years. The 2000 Honolulu Advertiser team is not included. There are plenty of great names in the chart from Glennie Adams in the tail end of University’s dynasty to Chanelle Molina’s second selection this year. In between are the greatest prep volleyball players the state has ever seen, but how would they […]

Blake, Kamehameha relied on end game

By Nick Abramo on November 29, 2015

Head coach Chris Blake hit a milestone on Halloween, when his Kamehameha girls volleyball team held off ‘Iolani for the Division I state championship. Blake (2005-10, ’13, ’15) passed Dan Kitashima, one of his mentors, with his eighth state title. Kitashima compiled seven state victories (1991-92, 1994-95, 1997-99) in his time as the Warriors’ coach. Kuuipo Lum (1969-70, 1977, 1982-83) was the coach for the five others of the 20 state crowns in school history. “I was fortunate to be […]

Kekauoha and grandfather share a special bond

By Nick Abramo on November 29, 2015

One of Moea Kekauoha‘s best volleyball traits is that she’s good at everything on the court —— hitting from the front row, hitting from the back row, digging, serving, passing and not making many mistakes. The senior was voted by coaches around the state to the No. 3 ranking in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Fab 15 that was released Sunday. It’s not a big surprise that Kakeauoha’s volleyball exploits have been at ‘Iolani, where her grandfather, Bernie Ching, has been a […]

‘Iolani girls recount their marvelous season

By Nick Abramo on November 29, 2015

It was a joyous occasion for ‘Iolani when it clinched a girls volleyball state-tournament berth at midseason. The Raiders, who went on to take the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I championship, hadn’t been to the states since 2007. Despite going 4-1 in regular-season and playoff games against Kamehameha, the Raiders fell short of winning it all to the Warriors in a five-set state-final showdown at Blaisdell Arena on Oct. 31. When next season rolls around, ‘Iolani will still be […]

Kamehameha’s Foster lines up college visits

By Billy Hull on November 28, 2015

Kamehameha senior Tainoa Foster has a big month of January ahead of him. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker — who holds offers from Hawaii, Washington State, Utah State and Fresno State — will take official visits to three different Division I schools in consecutive weekends in January. He’ll start with a trip to Pullman, Wash., on the 15th to visit the Cougars, who went 8-4 this season. ‘Iolani’s Keoni-Kordell Makekau is also scheduled to visit Washington State that weekend and more from […]

‘Iolani’s Makekau enjoys trip to Navy

By Billy Hull on November 25, 2015

‘Iolani senior Keoni-Kordell Makekau currently holds three Division I offers but is waiting to hopefully have more options before making his college choice. The 5-foot-10, 168-pound wide receiver, whose offer list consists of Navy, Washington State and Hawaii, took an official visit to Navy two weekends ago and found the school similar to his current high school. He attended the Midshipmen’s 55-14 win over SMU and somehow stayed warm despite taking only shorts with him on the trip. The temperature […]
