Sports to Ponder: Hush, hush on alliance front

By Nick Abramo on May 5, 2016

It’s all “hush, hush,” one Hawaii high school football coach said. Some others have said, “Why would anyone vote against this?” And then there’s those who say, “The OIA will never vote for it.” First, the hush, hush part. Every Oahu football head coach was contacted via email for any input they wanted to give on their feelings about the proposed OIA-ILH football alliance that will, in part, create a “power” conference of the top teams on Oahu. Only one […]

Alabama students try to say ‘Tagovailoa’

By Hawaii Prep World on May 4, 2016

The fine folks over at AL.com put up this video on YouTube asking current Alabama students to pronounce the name of Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who committed to the Crimson Tide on Monday. What follows is pretty funny … and a little scary.

Ilagan: Generation of Governor greats

By Paul Honda on May 4, 2016

Even the most casual tennis fan may have gathered this about Andre Ilagan, Farrington’s sophomore sensation on the tennis court: He’s a fairly quiet guy surrounded by folks who love to talk about him. As much as his coaches and dad, Sergio, had to say about the 3.5-grade point average student-athlete, it was impossible to fit all of their thoughts into one feature story. So here’s more. From scratch to title town Sergio has been a local cornerstone, a font […]

Tagovailoa rollin’ with the Crimson Tide

By Billy Hull on May 2, 2016

The highest-rated quarterback ever to come out of Hawaii is headed to the top collegiate program in the country. Saint Louis junior Tua Tagovailoa made it official on Monday, wrapping up his recruiting process early by committing to Alabama in a decision made public on the KHON2 6 p.m. newscast. Tagovailoa, who held 19 scholarship offers, had whittled it down to a final six of Alabama, Hawaii, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, USC, and UCLA. The Crimson Tide, who have won […]

Baldwin coach Lee would be OK with D-I

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

If an OIA-ILH football alliance materializes, there are many in the public questioning whether the Neighbor Islands leagues should be a part of it. The way the alliance has been proposed, it calls for three teams from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and seven from the Oahu Interscholastic Association in the Open division (also referred to unofficially as a superconference), leaving out some top-notch football schools such as Baldwin from the Maui Interscholastic League and Hilo from the Big Island […]

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

Allisen Corpuz took a 2-shot lead over Punahou teammate Mariel Galdiano on Monday in the girls portion of the David S. Ishii Foundation State Golf Championships at Wailua Golf Course on Kauai. Corpuz was a runner-up to Galdiano — who has won three state crowns in a row — a year ago and finished third three years ago as a freshman. Corpuz went 35-35—70 and is 2 under. Galdiano is at even par, with two girls — Lorraine Char of Kamehameha and […]

St. Francis remained steady for ILH D-II prize

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

The words “baseball championship” have a nice ring to it. Those words had not been heard at St. Francis until Thursday, when the Saints defeated Pac-Five 6-3 at Hans L’Orange Park to finish off a whirlwind Division II league campaign. St. Francis (14-5) cruised through the regular season with a 12-3 mark to nail down first place, but stumbled a bit in the postseason tournament and was taken out of tourney title consideration with losses to Pac-Five and Damien. But […]

Kapolei nestles into top softball spot

By Nick Abramo on May 2, 2016

For the first time all season, the No. 1 team in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 softball poll is not Campbell. Kapolei beat the Sabers 5-4 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association semifinals and then edged Mililani 6-5 in the championship game. All three teams – along with the other OIA semifinalist, Pearl City — will be competing in the upcoming state tournament. The Hurricanes (13-3) received nine of 14 first-place votes. Campbell (14-1) fell to No. 2 and still got three […]
