Matautia selected to U.S. Junior National Team

Recent Moanalua graduate Austin Matautia, who signed with Hawaii, was one of 12 players who made the final cut for the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team on Monday. The recruiting process is quickly winding down for Leilehua defensive back Charles Watson. Watson, who told the Star-Advertiser’s Stephen Tsai last month he wanted to make his decision by the end of the summer, released his list of six schools to make the latest cut for his services. Baldwin’s Anthony Kahoohanohano-Davis is the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Friday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior won three individual titles, set two state records and anchored a victorious relay at the state championship meet in May. Hawaii Prep’s Emma Taylor is the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the track. Taylor, a 5 foot 6 senior, won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.79 seconds and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 45.82 at the state meet in May, leading Ka Makani to the team championship. Kaiser’s Umemoto out as baseball coach

The revolving door continues in full swing for coaches at Kaiser. Head baseball coach Ryan Umemoto is the latest to find himself on the outside. The Cougars administration sent out a job posting, looking for applicants for the head baseball position. It is not clear whether Umemoto decided to step down or he was not rehired to the standard OIA one-year contract.
