OIA no longer selecting all-star teams

By Paul Honda on July 6, 2016

The intricacies and politics of all-star voting won’t be a burden for Oahu Interscholastic Association coaches any more. The league’s athletic directors council recently voted to end the tradition of coaches selecting all-stars for team sports. The decision reverts the process back to media, in all likelihood. In the early decades of the Rural Oahu Interscholastic Association, Interscholastic League of Honolulu and the merged OIA, all-league selections were done by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. “I don’t know when it changed. Kapolei is the “second city” and, it seems, with social engineering at work, the masses are moving out that way. It’s not just an alternative urban center to Honolulu, it’s a magnet for young families looking for affordable housing. Look at the relative strength of the football teams out West, starting with Mililani and moving on to Campbell, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae. Not a bad apple in the bunch, so to speak. Now, take a look at the public school […]

Michigan offers Kahuku freshman quarterback

By Hawaii Prep World on June 29, 2016

The eight-time and defending HHSAA state football champion Kahuku Red Raiders might look a little different on offense the next few years. Freshman quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, who will compete for the starting job this season, is so talented that he received his first Division I scholarship offer on Tuesday from Michigan and head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, who was in town for his ‘Summer Swarm’ camp over the weekend, didn’t leave without serving up a huge offer for the Kahuku […]
