By Jerry Campany on October 31, 2016

This year’s 808 Prep Soccer Showcase will kick off Wednesday, Nov. 23 and run through Saturday with a day off for Thanksgiving. It will be a double-elimination format this year with each team guaranteed three matches. Kapolei and Mililani will split hosting the first round with the rest of the tournament on the […]

Kahuku holds steady at No. 22 in nation

By Hawaii Prep World on October 31, 2016

There hasn’t been much of an opportunity for Kahuku to climb any higher in the USA Today Super 25 rankings. A ranked team hasn’t loss to a unranked team since September, meaning Kahuku once again holds steady at No. 22 in the latest rankings released Monday. The Red Raiders defeated Farrington 44-8 to win their second consecutive OIA championship last Friday. After the game, head coach Vavae Tata accepted the trophy but said this isn’t the one he is looking […]

Big Blue Bite: LJA’s first state crown

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2016

The pendulum swung from one great team to the other, back and forth. In the end, the momentum belonged to tiny Le Jardin, which captured its first state championship girls volleyball — or any sport — with a frantic, five-set thriller win over four-time defending champion Hawaii Baptist in the New City Nissan/HHSAA State Championships on Saturday. Timing, as well as talent, meant a lot. The Bulldogs, with all-tournament most outstanding player Nina Krupa at setter, and all-tourney selections Kassidy […]

Rockets Red Glare: ‘Iolani survives, thrives

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2016

Kainoa Obrey. A happy man. He’s not leaping for joy. Not in public. Maybe that’s something that happens when the ‘Iolani Raiders have quiet time together. They won their first girls volleyball state championship since 2001 — when the late, great Ann Kang was head coach — and when all the exuberance and hugging was done, the Raiders calmly departed Neal Blaisdell Center. The pendulum swung painfully wild at times for ‘Iolani this season, from nearly being eliminated from state-tourney […]

Island hoppers: Coaches convene at presser

By Paul Honda on October 30, 2016

They came from near and far to the center of the prep football universe. Aloha Stadium is where coaches gather from around the state for a press conference before the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships kick off. With an expanded format this season, there are eight more teams (Division I), making it 20 in three classifications. Cal Lee was there, just two days after successful surgery to remove a kidney stone. Neighbor island coaches were there, answering questions in […]
