By Paul Honda on November 11, 2016

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best quarterbacks in the state. This is more of a run-through than a breakdown of QB statistics for the first time since almost two months. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course. That’s why this is Nerdpod, not fanpod. Some amazing, eye-popping numbers this season. QBs listed below in random order for the most part. QUARTERBACKS Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis Measurables: 6-1, 210, […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 10, 2016

The Campbell catcher helped lead the Sabers to the Division I state title in May and signed with reigning NCAA champion Oklahoma on Wednesday. Alo was named the Star-Advertiser All-State Position Player of the Year as a junior and joins an Oklahoma program that has won three national championships under coach Patty Gasso and two in the last four years. They went 57-8 last season and edged Auburn 2-1 in […]

Big game on the Big Island

By Jerry Campany on November 10, 2016

Despite the rich history between the leagues, Lahainaluna will be the first Maui team to travel to the Big Island when it visits Konawaena to play the BIIF champion Wildcats on Saturday. The Lunas (7-4) will take on the Wildcats (8-1) for a berth in the Division II title game. With the Neighbor Island Bowl a thing of the past, Saturday’s game passes for the biggest clash between the league on the Big Island in this century. The leagues used […]

Clash of champions at girls soccer tourney

By Jerry Campany on November 10, 2016

The 33rd annual Castle-Leilehua girls soccer tournament filled out its field recently, and it’s a good one. The event begins Nov. 17 and ends with the championship two days later. The early rounds are split between Castle and Leilehua with the championship held on the Mules’ field. Defending state champion Pearl City headlines the field. Last year the Chargers shut out Roosevelt 7-0 to win the tournament and begin its journey to a state championship. In addition to the Chargers, […]

Trojans, Mules ready for round 3

By Jerry Campany on November 10, 2016

Fans who bemoaned the loss of a true rivalry game between Mililani and Leilehua the last two years were repaid this season. The Mules and Trojans had faced off every year since 1998 before two years ago when the OIA decided the West was too tough and merged the divisions. They certainly made up for it this year, with the rivals meeting for the third time this season when they clash in the semifinals of the Division I state tournament […]

The Register-Guard reported Tuesday that former Punahou defensive end Canton Kaumatule has accepted a medical hardship and will no longer play football at the University of Oregon. Kaumatule will be permitted to complete his education in Euguene on scholarship. The 6-foot-7, 295-pound sophomore was a Star-Advertiser all-state selection at Punahou. He played in five games this season and made three tackles and is no longer listed on Oregon’s official football roster. He’s the second Oregon player from Hawaii forced to […]

VIDEO: Kapolei vs. Punahou highlights

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2016

Kapolei. Punahou. It was a marquee matchup in the quarterfinal round of the newly-created Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. It wasn’t a new being, of course. The six-team format of Open Division mirrored the previous top-tiered division at the state tourney, Division I. In that division, there had rarely ever been such a tough matchup for both teams, but this was the first time an Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up was permitted to play for […]
