‘Tis the season for hoops hysteria

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2016

I‘m grateful for many things. One is covering sports for eight years in a place that has, as my old editor Bobby Command (at West Hawaii Today) would say, “provincial” qualities. Honokaa vs. Kohala basketball in the 1990s drew packed gyms for boys and girls games. Cousins versus cousins, going back generations. Keone Emeliano, Kalei Emeliano, Travis Van Zandt, Kihei Kapeliela, Benny Alcoran launching 3-point bombs all night for Kohala. Jayme Carvalho, Taich Alip, Kaulana Noa holding down the fort […]

Days after winning his second state football title and first in his third stint as Saint Louis coach, Cal Lee told the Star-Advertiser’s Dave Reardon he “really doesn’t know” if he’ll return for a 25th season in 2017. Reardon’s full column on the Lee brothers that ran in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser can be viewed here. Lee, Hawaii’s all-time winningest head football coach in high school, is 263-39-5 in 24 seasons for an .865 winning percentage. He won 13 Preps Bowls […]

Kahuku’s Kaniho lands in national record book

By Paul Honda on November 22, 2016

According to National Federation of High School (NFHS) records, Kekaula Kaniho of Kahuku ranks second all-time for most interceptions returned for touchdowns in one season. Kaniho, a 6-foot, 170-pound senior, finished the season five pick-sixes for OIA champion Kahuku. That ties him with Isaiah Keyes of Notth Hagerstown, Md., who had his five in 2013. The record of six interceptions returned for TDs is shared by two players: Maurice Cooper of Saginaw Nouvel, Mich. (1994), and Ben Sukut of Mission […]

Lee: Purcell the ‘heart’ of Crusaders’ defense

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2016

When Cal Lee says something about his football team, you can bet he’s not blowing hot air. He called linebacker Noa Purcell “the heart” of the Saint Louis defense on Monday morning. Lee’s Crusaders defeated Kahuku 30-14 on Saturday night in the state Open Division championship, and it was made possible with players like Purcell leading the defensive charge. Purcell was chasing down Red Raiders runners all night — the ones coming at him, the ones he flagged down on the […]
