For all of the great players to come out of Hawaii for the past quarter century, ‘Iolani outside hitter Elena Oglivie‘s potential stands right alongside them. By Paul Honda on November 26, 2016

The Maryknoll Spartans are looking more and more like a team without a major flaw. They look a lot like last year’s squad, which reached the final of the HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships and lost to the dynastic Konawaena Wildcats. Chico Furtado‘s team took command during the second quarter […]

Pearl City went 3-0 in the tournament, beating Iolani and Mililani in shootouts before taking out the Warriors in regulation. Kamehameha has not been to the state tournament since 2011 and Pearl City’s drought […]

Coach Speak: Feedback on new football format

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2016

The timing was right. The state tournament, officially branded the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, came to a close last weekend. Coaches, all of them, were done for the year. What did they think of the new format, adding one division of eight teams, expanding to a 20-team format? Most of the coaches who responded by phone, text or e-mail had plenty to say, and yet they agreed that the new three-tiered look is, well, awesome. They also had […]
