Hungriest No. 1 team ever? Kahuku routs Kalaheo

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2017

It was an astounding first 6 minutes for the Kahuku Red Raiders. From the opening tip until there was a little more than 2 minutes left in the opening quarter, Kahuku not only looked like an undisputed No. 1 boys basketball team in Hawaii, but played like they’ve been underdogs all season. All their lives. It was Kalaheo, ranked ninth after a few losses in preseason and OIA East play (to Kaiser) that had more to do with key injuries […]

By Paul Honda on January 5, 2017

Not long ago, ‘Iolani’s Hugh Hogland was a tall, gangly kid who could barely make a shot. Then came years of a repetition, growth spurts and a love for basketball that has been exceeded by only one thing: his accomplishments. The 6-foot-9 senior and last season’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State Player of the Year will get a chance to play at the college level, he said. “I pretty much committed to UC Santa Barbara,” Hogland said after the third-ranked Raiders toppled […]
