Moli the Motor: Heimuli’s 35 and 26 lead Govs

By Paul Honda on January 4, 2017

It’s not often that a center handles the ball on the wing, the top and even the backcourt with regularity. For Moli Heimuli, playing all but 3 minutes or so was just another tough night at the gym. The 5-foot-11 senior was ready and able, pounding the low post, crashing the offensive boards and running the break for 35 points and 26 rebounds in a tougher-than-the-score-indicates 60-45 win over visiting Kalani on Tuesday night. “She’s getting used to staying in. […]

Case for KS-Maui hoops is a-maze-ing

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2017

The polls for high school sports are what they have always been and probably always will be: whipped cream. No nutritional value. No two ballots are alike, and I will almost always disagree with how the week’s voting went by the Star-Advertiser Top 10 panel whether it’s basketball, baseball, football, ramen restaurants, fried chicken joints, shave ice eateries, pick-up basketball courts, movies… That’s the nature of it. Not entirely a science, certainly an art. Here’s the new Top 10 released […]

Çagla Brennan keeps life simple: work hard, play hard, enjoy and celebrate the effort. It just so happens that she has the drive of a champion. Brennan is a defending state champion in the 500-meter freestyle who is a big spark for the ‘Iolani Raiders. Her coach at ‘Iolani Swim Club, Ivan Batzanov, is also on staff for the school’s varsity swim team. “She’s the hardest worker I have. She’s very committed to what she’s doing. I’ve coached her since […]

As they sleep, Tua keeps working

By Paul Honda on January 1, 2017

Honolulu Star-Advertiser all-state offensive player of the year Tua Tagovailoa has a work ethic that borders on legendary. When he’s not refining his skills, the Saint Louis senior spends Sunday afternoons helping his father, Galu, teach skills to youth players in Ewa Beach. Somehow, between training, teaching and commuting — he finished school early and has enrolled for the spring semester at Alabama — Tagovailoa hits the weight room. This link at SEC Country shows a video of of him […]
